Nice things that Harbourmasters HAVE said...

"come back in half an hour and we'll move the tenders along so you can spend the night tied up alongside the visitors pontoon"

Buckler's Hard Harbourmaster to a very tired me after a long day singlehanded - much appreciated !

Brixham Marina about 23:00 after a long, wet crossing of Lyme Bay:-
You're in the fairway, I bet you can see lots of red and green lights. Well head for the two vertical reds that are flashing and I'll talk you into your berth from there.

May I take your lines and here is the latest weather forecast in English.

Dielette for the first time, about half tide;

The Capitaine du Port came out in his motor boat and showed us the deepest part of the entrance channel and we just made it in.

In WSKLuM [Air Force] marina Nieuwpoort, we got a message that a parent had been taken ill.
We told th HM that we needed to leave the boat and return to UK.
His response.
" Leave everything, we will look after your yacht. Do you need a lift to the ferry?"

Kindness in time of stress is doubly appreciated.

I agree with Grandcamp maisy. A few years ago SWMBO broke her shoulder falling on the pontoon while mooring up. Just leave the yacht we'll take care of it, called ambulance. Stayed 4 nights only charged for 2. She didn't even mind being called Madame Nelson! Very nice people there.

A busy "posh" solent marina 'how big's the boat' 32feet says I 'that doesn't seem very big' replied the lad 'I don't do feet only metres, is 7.6 OK?' Still charged £30 though!

A few months back. we tried to start the donkey outside fowey... and nothing.... spend 30 mins trying to start it. then decided to call the HM up to declare our intentions to sail in and either anchor or pick up a buoy under sail. within mins the HM came out to tow us in and to tie us up. we intended to look at the engine in the morning.... but within mins of tying to the buoy the HM was down below playing with the engine he had it started in five mins :D we gave him some beer tokens for his time :D

Carlingford Marina on enquiring where I could get petrol...

The nearest is Warrenpoint, but if you're stuck I'll give you a lift to get some.

Good Lord, nearest petrol in Warrenpoint? What about Newry, which you have to drive through to get to Warrenpoint on the northern shore of Carlingford Lough? Or Omeath, 6 miles down the road?

Carlingford is used to "inexperienced" boaties, we've often had to help people who have moored to the back of the old (village) breakwater on a falling tide. Flat bottomed dories are good for towing boats in very shallow water!
