So, all-knowing forum..... on the west of the atlantic, where is there that is:

a. South of about 12 degrees
b. Somewhere that you would feel safe leaving a boat for several weeks at a time
c. Has good access to facilities such as boat hoists, skilled labour and parts i.e. civilisation
d. Reasonably accessible by air.

and an extra one - where in the caribbean can you get a boat shipped from to europe?

Trinidad ticks all the boxes. Venezuela most of them - not sure but I think air travel in and out is a bit more expensive. ABC islands also are good with cheap air fares.
Dockwise is around £4-5000 but very infrequent departures and you need to be there at both ends of loading and tipping..

Add Curacao to the list, for haulout best is Curacao Marine. Curacao also has direct flights to Europe. Yacht shipping goes from BVI, Martinique, Antigua, Curacao and (I think) St Martin.

South of 'about' 12 degrees just about lets you consider Grenada - depending exactly where you decide to leave the boat! It ticks all the other boxes, though is undoubtedly not as safe hurricane-wise as Trini, PLC or Curacao. Be aware that all these places are getting quite full these days so pre-booking is prudent - we only just got into Curacao Marine at 2 months notice because of a cancellation.

Cartagena is also an option, though I'd put it at the bottom of the list against your criteria.

Finally, if you are thinking of moving your boat to the lovely Caribee, it's worth researching the insurance issues if you have not already. Tie-down is becoming a common requirement, but different companies are taking different attitudes towards location. For example Pantaenius are now happy for you to be anywhere (they want to spread the risk) provided the boat is properly stored.

Just been looking at this in some detail as we plan to be there soon. I am going to insure with Offshore Risk Managment - a local BVI broker, because they are local and still offer a discount if you move out of the hurricane belt (unlike Pantaneus, who are aslo consderably more expensive). They have two underwriters who set different definitions, one uses 11 degrees one 12. However if you want to stay in the belt over the summer you can also do so for a reasonable extra fee (about $500) so then anywhere in the area is accesible. From what I can gather Trinidad/Curacao is still the cheapest for laying up charges although I would be interested to know what the going rates are these days?

Thanks for the replies - I'll study all those places in more detail.

As for the insurance I'm with Pantaenius - basically as has been said you're covered in the hurricane belt - the provisos being 100% on the hull if you're at sea when a named storm hits /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif and if its ashore and buried (to the top of the mast? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) and 75% if it's in a marina - I'm happy with that risk.

We'd just got back to the boat 2 days back when tropical storm Barry narrowly passed us by.... oh... and my outboard had been nicked /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif ... oh well... I wanted a Yamaha anyway.

We got quote from this company (we are insured with Pantaenius) they were more expensive and had about half the cover. Having experience Pantaenius's service when our boat was almost destroyed in Ivan, we can't fault them, they seemed to be better than most of our friends' insurers, as many of them changed to P after Ivan.

For a 34-foot yacht from Palma de Majorca to Martinique in late November, Dockwise is currently quoting around 6,800 to 7,800 UK pounds, depending on when you pay.

Its not south of 12 degrees but most insurers will grant an exemption here in the Rio Dulce , Guatemala.

We have just arrived here and found a marina berth at $125 a month!! There are 3 haulout facilities from a travel lift to a railway. Reasonable skilled labour.
Flights with Iberian around 450 to Madrid where you can get cheap connections to Uk.
Rainy season is late this year so not sure about humidity, get an a/c though to be sure. Power about $100 a onth to keep it running 24/7

Great out of season cruising in the river and lakes too!! See you there!
