Great sail up the Solent today, easily beat my pervious record from Yarmouth to Chi Bar

Refreshing lack of radio checks so channel 16 was quiet apart from one boat heard calling every yacht around incessantly repeatadly. My crew wanted to throttle 'this bleedin' tw*t with VHF-itus' if he ever met him. After hours of this his voice eventually failed him. My crew worried that a wire must have dropped off his radio

Didn't let on the culprit was known to me...

clearly depends which direction you were going in.

we got out of Bembridge and cleared the island by about 1215 - bearing to our destination, 310. Wind - NW,ly F5-6. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Boats going in the opposite direction on a comfortable broad reach. Us, bashing into it with the donkey going. Crew (SWMBO and another couple) not up to tacking up the Solent and Southampton water.

Fair amount of spray coming over, and a couple of greenies. WHen a large shower came through, we saw 38knots apparent. Heard a mayday, because a Flying Dutchman had sunk - apparently 2m of mast sticking out of the water, crew rescued by a Mobo until the lifeboat got there.

Then saw a Jeanneau (I think) dismasted just before Hamble entrance - with rescue services in attendance.

quite a few more shouts to SCG too.

As I was saying ......

Re: As I was saying ......

We left Haslar at lunch time for Cowes, with one crew first time out. We turned around when it got to a F6, he looked a bit pale.

Then it dropped long enough for us to think it had changed, so around we went. But it picked up again and we decided to call it a day. On the way back in a squall blew over and we saw 36 knots apparent, while running at 8 knots. Then we heard the mayday on the Flying Dutchman.

Glad we'd reefed. Was doubly pleased when we got back to base to find SWMBO say she enjoyed the sailing, saying "always good to see how the boat handles bad weather". Didn't mention that a different point of sail would have been less straightforward. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We did over 10kn surfing off the overfalls at the Needles on Sat pm - F6 against a springs ebb - fantastic!

Took this yesterday when I got back to Northney. To be fair this must have happened as we surfed off Bembridge, I was expecting to see the 10.5knts that we saw between Yarmouth and Cowes on Monday morning!

You got off the pontoon very nicely, even with the nasty squall going over.

VMT

Thank you for your hospitality over the weekend, a pleasure being berthed next to you.

I hope your engine woes are fixed?

Hello Mark,

No problems going back to Chichester so putting it down to the Solent triangle.

Great to meet you both and look forward to doing it again.

Kevin.

Don't want to steal your thunder but think you need to calibrate your log. We did the same trip same time and our total logged distance was just 21 miles so you are over-reading

We didnt go straight back to Northney, we were sailing around off Bembridge watching the Volvo boats assemble. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We checked the log last season against our trailing log, spot on. But I will check again next time out.

There's a measured 0.5M (926 metres) either side of Marker on the Hayling side, marked by yellow transit posts with X topmarks. Worth a check next time youre going out?
