Has anyone got any experience of hire companies to avoid , or any stand out good service recommendations . Going down on Monday for a few days and going to have a nosey around .Thanks in advance for any tips

All the car hire firms are fine. EuropeCar's link-up with easyjet means they can have longer queues than all the other brands if a couple of summer easyjet flights land together, so for that reason I tend to use say Hertz which is a bit more expensive hence no queues. When I say queues at europecar, I'm talking about 30mins to an hour when it's busy, so you do want to avoid that.
If you land at terminal 2 (easyjet) the car rental centre is a 3 minute walk (strisght on, not left or right) as you exit the terminal. If you land at terminal 1 (BA) turn left on entering arrivals from the airside part, and walk all the way to the end (75 metres) and outside, and the shuttlebus to car rentals is right there

recently I booked a few times at

they are part of booking.com group
effcient and easy booking and good offerings so far,
renting a car has become extremely cheap in some country's, also in SOF iirc

good advice regarding queues
in Marseille it was the opposite, Hertz was more busy,
but Hertz is connected with Ryanair, who has a hub in Marseille
at the end I had a gold member card (foc) then there is little to no waiting time
anybody can book a car at Herts via the Ryanair website, which is cheaper then via the Hertz site, even if you didn't book a flight
but I'm not sure if one can book a car hire via Ryanairsite for pickup in Nice as this is no Ryanair airport.

Avoid Enterprise -really S---------L-----------O---------------W Booking in /detail taking /finding key etc
Others bit of a lottery regarding flights coming in .
They are all in one "centre " at T2 with as said regular shuttle from T1 on the left from exit .
