our new (old) nic 38 has the gas bottles stowed in the main saloon so this has be our first job, we thought of storing the gas bottles on deck in a box and running the gas pipe from this, anyone with any experience of this, all bright ideas gratefully received.

Hi there,

I also own a Nic 38. The normal place for them is to have them in a teak box on either side of the mizzen mast. I recently replaced the gas system - the 10mm gas pipe goes down through the deck, under the port aft cabin bunk, under the aft heads floor, round the back of the port cockpit locker (behind the steering prop shafts), and comes out in the bin locker in the galley.

Good system as the bottles are on the deck, and the boxes make a great seat to sit and watch the sun go down!

If you want more details, please get in touch.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Ditto on Paleymas comments. My gas boxes recently came off during the re-furb, just to have the mizzen-mast deck compression taken care of.
I can't think of a better location on a Nic-38, & they do make good seats. The only thing that I would improve on my boxes is to have custom-made F/G boxes, faired to fit the look/shape of the aft cabin-top, either side of the Mizzen, or more likely, have them re-manufactured in say, Teak which I think would complement the boat nicely instead of the utilitarian painted-ply boxes that came with mine.
I'll have mine re-made sometime in the near future as I'm renewing more important gear just now.
Jeff
