I've bought a 1st generation Nexus 7 and was thinking about using it for navigation. Please bear in mind that I'm a bit of a technophobe therefore keep it simple LOL. What app should I get.?

I used the VMH app on the Nexus 7 and I think it's brill.
Whilst I had paper charts covering Cardiff to Southwold I hardly looked at them during the 7 day trip last year.
The nexus fits in my waterproof pocket a treat so great in the cockpit although to be honest it spent most of its time lying on the chart table.
My biggest plus for it is that my kids would use it to see where we were, how fast, check progress where they would never look at a paper chart.
The other great thing is the VMH pilots for harbours which I downloaded as well.
On long passage though you'll need to keep the 12v charger plugged in as I only got 4 hours with the brightness turned right up.

TBH I've not tried Navionics but at £28 or around that for the VMH, I think it must be hard to beat.

I can't comment on the Nexus but used the Marine Navigator app with the VMH charts extensively last summer around the west coast of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides and was extremely pleased. My tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.

You could try MXmariner.. its £4 for the programme, and £4 for the charts (and they are big).
It isnt the most sophisticated nav system by any means, but it is full charts and basic planning. For £8 I suggest you give it a go !!
