Next Boat : Volvo , Yanmar or Perkins

The Perkins produces its power from 6 litres and 6 cylinders, the Volvo from 3.7 litres and 4 cylinders. Which one will last longest . ?

No brand loyalty here but I'm not sure I follow you. Are you saying 8.1percent difference in litres per cylinder is significant?

I've had an M225Ti in one boat and a pair of M265Ti in another. They are marvellous engines. You will never wear one out in pleasure boat. I know of a pair that did 12000 hours in a commercial boat are are going strong in a pleasure boat.

Perkins spares prices are very reasonable.

The Cummins B series - off topic as its not in a Nimbus or Mitchell, is a great engine, strong as an ox, but let down by 2 things, anecdotally I find them to be mechanically noisier than the Perkins and Cummins spares pricing is as bad as Yanmar.

Latestarter was always very sceptical about Perkins HP claims and reckoned they were a bit optimistic to say the least. If the D4 version is producing 225 HP from its 3.7L total capacity and the Perkins is producing 225HP from 6L, the VP will be working much harder to produce the power ? The 6 cylinder is also much smoother regards vibration.

love a lazy unstressed engine when it comes to wanting something to really last.. I have a car with 6.8l producing circa 240bhp and a boat with 6l producing 225 or thereabouts... both continue to give me excellent service.. and one gives excellent mpg...

Previous boat had 2 x Perkins M135. 130 HP (ish) from 6 litres, present boat has 2 x 200hp from 3.6 litres, want to take bets on which one will need a rebuild first ?

Whilst I understand your logic, whoever heard of a leisure marine diesel engine simply wearing out?

The Perkins might last longer in theory, but in practice, if it's looked after and run properly, the Volvo Penta will last forever, and the Perkins will last forever plus a bit longer.
