\"News of the world\" into sailing!!!!

I see 2moros News of the Screws is to give an exclusive on the 14 year old nipper that just sailed the Atlantic.......bet Knox Johnson and the likes never made that paper, more like the Telegraph I guess.....bit like "Slimming magazine" writing an article on Fish and Chips..!! whats the scam then????

Re: \"News of the world\" into sailing!!!!

There's only one thing they want - Sell More Papers;
hence - Sell more advertising; & Make More money!

14 year-old, appeals to mums; sailing adventure, appeals to dads; Current news on network TV so "hot topic" what more could they want - perhaps link to scantily clad ladies at LIBS?

Perhaps they remember the success the Mirror had with their dinghy and want to sponsor the lad's dad as boat designer? Maybe they should look at what happened to the Mirror Offshore then!

Anybody here got a Mirror Offshore? I liked the concept but could never cope with how small it was.

Re: \"News of the world\" into sailing!!!!

When I was about 3 years old, my parents nearly bought a Mirror Offshore for sale here at the time - they didnt in the end because my sister and I said it was too tippy....

Much later on I met a chap who did an Atlantic circuit singlehanded in his MO. After he got back home to the UK, he decided he needed a much bigger boat - so he bought a standard 19 ft Colvic Watson hull, decked it over completely. put a junk rig on her, and went off round the world with her.... this was in the mid 80s I think.

Henry still owns Glory, and every summer he goes off on a singlehanded cruise from Poole to the Shetlands and back.

In fact, some years back Henry received an invitation to a party in San Francisco, so he sailed there (singlehanded) from Poole - via the Canaries and Panama - and then sailed back home via the same route after the party had finished.

One amazing Skipper, with an equally amazing yacht.

During the 60's I recall my history teacher insisting that all paper boys who delivered newspapers should wash their hands after delivering the News of World.

Re: Mirrors and Glorys

It is a good story isnt it?
And it is absolutely true.
In fact Henry has got to be the most modest and unassuming chap you might ever have the good fortune to meet - he is a complete contrast to those sailors who make a cruise round Portland sound like a voyage around the Horn.

I have just realised that I mentioned above that Henry returned via the same route - before some pedantic corrects me, I meant via Panama - he then returned to England via Bermuda and the Azores.

Re: Mirrors and Glorys

Hi Martin, you forgot to tell 'em Henry's age /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Charlie.

Re: Mirrors and Glorys

Oops, sorry, yes, good point!
I am not too sure, but he must be about 80 now, and I am sure he will be pottering off to the Shetlands again next summer, same as what he did last summer.

Re: Mirrors and Glorys

and you either forgot to mention his dad was sailing a mile behind him all the way (so is it really classed as a solo voyage) ........ or maybe his wasnt at that ripe old age /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Mirrors and Glorys

You dont have to slink away abashed Suzy - that was a pretty damn impressive voyage you have just completed across Biscay, in atrocious conditions.
I am sure that not many folk on here (me included) would have had the gumph to do a passage like that in December.

Re landaftof, yes, valid point, Henrys old man was keeping tabs on the lad while following along behind in his Caprice...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This rings a bell......... didn't one of the mags run an article about him and his boat some time ago? Little skinny fella with a beard, sailed in his carpet slippers? If so, I'll do a trawl and see if I can find it.

Re: A nice photo of Glory under sail
