News for Lowrance 3500c owners, its not good I\'m afraid.

I just took ownership of a Lowrance 5200c, the replacement for the 3500c. My old 3500c went pop in the warranty period and has been replaced with a brand new 5200c! Thanks very much to B&G/Simrad or who ever it is who owns Lowrance now.

The bad news is, I connected it all up at home yesterday to re enter the waypoints. I had expected to find the fathoms/metres tidal anomaly on this brand new plotter with a new software version to have been resolved, but no! Fathoms and metres are still reversed!

Ian

What the problem is, you set the 'units of measurement' in the setup menu to metres and although the little box on the screen with the tidal gauge says 'M' for metres, it is in fact fathoms. If you set the control the other way around, you get the correct measurement but it displays 'F'. Not so confusing when you know what the problem is. But my point is that the issue has been in existence now for some years despite software upgrades and now even with a new plotter they haven't bothered to change it.

Good evidence I think of the USA's ignorance to the existence of Europe, it dont affect them, so who cares!

Not to my knowledge, there are other users on the forum, maybe they have other information.

To be fair its a good little unit and with the Nuaticpath charts for use in UK cruising its ideal. I dont use mine as a main source of navigation/information but more as a moving chart when approaching an unfamiliar harbour, saves going below to see the chart.

I have the Nauticpath chart for Northern Europe for my 3600. The picture is vary clear and the charts seem accurate for East Sweden (only place we sailed this year)
Problem areas noted:-
1. No harbour layouts, no bridge and power line hiechts
2. Quite difficult to get good contrast between land and water - needs fiddle with the controls
3. When you need to see buoys there are only a few scales you can use. Its a result of the method of automatic clutter control.
Buoy positioning seems (limited test) to be more accurate than Navionics.
I'm very satisfied - and amazed at the amount of information you get free (chip thrown in with plotter) This chart covers ALL baltic and ALL Scandinavia.

Having been one of the leading "headbashers" on this issue for over two years, it doesn't surprise me in the least that this bug is still there. I've given up on Lowrance ever taking it seriously, and I don't know if they've fixed the DST issues in the tidal module or the Navionics chart tidal data corruption on certain days either. I can't be bothered sending any more e-mails to them on the topic. If somebody else would like to take over, please feel free. As a chart plotter I can't fault it, but the tidal module was (still is?) bug-ridden and is better ignored or switched-off IMHO.
