\"NEWS FLASH\"

More and more people are coming down with this new addiction, it starts off harmless enough, at first, just the odd thing or two, but

soon becomes total addiction, to date, there is no know cure.

So all you out there beware, don't start down this slippery path,

I hear you ask " what is it"

its worse than drinking.........!

Re: \"NEWS FLASH\"

Start of last season the wife announced as she does every year that the grass cutting was getting to much so she wanted to move house.
After I calmed her down I told her in future I would do it and we should stay where we are.
Bad mistake – Tried to bribe the kids no joy at all. After 3 cuts I`d had enough and was losing valuable boating time. So I decided to buy a tractor lawnmower.
Where from? Yes you guessed it E-Bay
The first one I saw had a reserve of £1000 so I registered and bid £1020.00 then spent the next 2 days watchkeeping to see if anyone outbid me.
Came the allotted time and 2 minutes before time someone bid £1040.
With E-Bay demanding action, and me trying desperately to remember my password so I could up the bid, I ran out of time.
I was amazed by the reaction I had, I quite enjoyed it.
3 days later I had an Email from eBay saying the winning bid had defaulted and did I want it. As I had found out by this time the seller lived in Glasgow I declined.
So I did my homework and found that ride on tractors usually go up to about £750. sit there for about a week, then all the bidding happens in the last 3 minutes when the price usually doubles.
So when I saw a nearly new Honda for sale at Oxford I decide to go for it.
As eBay will bid for you in increments of £20 per time you have to bid about £200 in front of the bidding at the time you submit the bit
Timing is everything. You have to log in and be ready to submit your bit 5 or 6 seconds before the bell.
Doing this with 6 seconds left at £20 a time it usually costs 2 bids before the time runs out, hopefully ending on your bid.
As I was the successful bidder I was given the Email address of the seller whom I contacted and asked if I could collect the Tractor and after inspection pay him cash.
If on inspection you find it is not as described you are allowed to cancel.
A couple of days later we collected it and have since put it to good use.

There`s now no shortage of volunteers to cut the grass

Thanks Honda thanks EBay

Re: \"NEWS FLASH\"

Totally agree that there is a huge amount of c**p on e-bay.

Yet last week I picked up a nice bit of yachting kit in good condition for 20% of retail price. Jury is still out . . . /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: \"NEWS FLASH\"

If you read the tutorial you'll find you can bid by proxy. Basically you put the maximum amount you wish to pay. Then your bids will automatically be placed in your absence. For eg, your lawn mower. You want to pay a max of 1000 quid. Bang that in the max bid box and the system will automaticaly place you bids in the increments of what ever the auction is. It will stop bidding on your behalf once its reached your max amount. So even if someone bids with 15 seconds to go the system will out bid them.

Or try using a snipe bidder as your proxy. My brother introduced me to it, and I used it first a couple of weeks ago. Basically you pay a very small commission (only if you are successful) to a fast computer system to bid at the very last second. Worked for me last time. Try google for sniping and the first few are free on most of the sites.
