Burrs in Newport is probably the finest eating place on the IOW. During Cowes week its full of crew who are not happy with the food in Cowes. If you are in Newport The bargemasters opposite the quay is at best eatable but how it is rated with the same food quality as Burrs is a bit of a mystery. As Burrs is always busy Lugleys a little further up the same road is much of the same quality. And the good old George is good value for money. Also not to be missed particularly in the week is of all places Yates wine lodge. they have two for the price of one offers on food, cheap beer, and its very nice at lunch times. There is also Woodys, up the stairs by what was a church, £1,20 a pint for premium lagers, good to have a couple before going on the £2,40 a pint stuff elsewhere. ( Be warned there is a considerable difference between the patrons of Burrs and Woodys, it may be a bit of a culture shock). Showers are free at Newport and theres no mafia water taxi to pay, the kids are sometimes a bit noisy when they are swimming, but are usually are good sorts. The railway inn just round the corner has lost a lot of its charm since it changed hands, a lot of its customers have decamped to the Worlds end about 50 yards away. As for the Medina Quay, you are customer number 02398701, and you will have 126grams of meat and 220 of chips, make of that what you will. It all looks clean though. Oh I almost forgot! Sunday lunch at the Barley Mow, 11 veggies plus two sorts of potatoes 4 or 5 good slices of beef or sheep, dont have the £5,50 one you wont eat it all, the £4,50 is plenty enough, some people even take the meals home, its a short walk from the quay and the pub has a lovely dog, a real charmer. ask directions all the locals know it. The harbourmaster always has his sunday lunch there. Think I have covered all the good places but there are sure to be more.

A few points:

1. Bargemasters? Do you mean The Bargemans Rest?
2. Where is the George?
3. Where is the Medina Quay?
4. The Barley Mow - a short walk?
5. Isn't Woodys a nightclub?

1 There is no Bargemasters, must be the Bargeman's Rest.

2 The George is up by the bus station next to Mcdonalds.

3 The Medina Quay is 300 yds downriver from the quay, you pass it on the way up (E side. It is a clone of The Lifeboat at E Cowes).

4 Barley Mow is at Shide about 20 minutes walk, outskirts of Newport on the Sandown/Shanklin road. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ukvillages.co.uk/ukvpubs.nsf/pubs/Barley+Mow-PO30+1HS?open&root=qroot>here</A>

5 Woodys is the bar adjoining the nightclub that is called Temptations (in the old church). It is where the nightclubbers start off.

Yes sorry about that it is of course the Bargemans Rest. And thanks for the details of how to get to the places. I didnt realise that the Medina Quay is a clone of the lifeboat, thats another one off the list. I havent been in Woodys at night but its a cheap place to go for a tank up before festivities. The bargemans rest does have all the papers in the mornings, but so does Somerfield, which is also good for breakfast. Joyce's cafe in Scarrots lane is good value too, a proper breakfast resturant, plates so hot you cannot touch them, lovely and papers too. So far the Folly doesnt seem to have got back to the same standard of 3 years ago, even the old manager has returned but its not what it was.
