Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

Get yourself down to your local yacht club, they are always looking for crew and will take on a novice.

If you find someone with a gaff rig I'm sure they will be only too happy to help you, if only to ensure another gaffer in the club at a later stage.

Alright Dave, there is an Old Gaffers` Association with a website and plenty of races, rallies etc. Also you can do RYA Competent Crew,Watch Leader and Day Skipper on gaff cutters, from newbuilds to over 100 yrs old, with Trinity Trust in Brixham,Classic Sailing in St Mawes off the cuff and several others, what boat you got and what are you doing with it?Regards Jerry

Hi i have a Salterns boatbuilders Sou'wester 18 we (my father and i) fitted her out in the front garden but our sailing experience leaves alot to be desired

Welcome Dave. Sailing clubs will certainly help. When you get past the basics, there's no substitute for time on the water. Get out and enjoy your boat - possibly with an experienced friend and certainly somewhere not too threatening. Reeds are good things - they don't do any damage if you sail into them! Sailing should turn out to be the hobby of a lifetime. Old Frank

Hi thanks for the replies i've been in touch with a local club who have emailed me to say i can make 5 visits before joining so hopefully i can find some poor sole to take me out and give me some confidence
