I figured I'd better introduce myself

As the username would suggest, my name is Pat, I have a Freeman 23 moored at Abingdon

I'm an engineer by trade, time on the river is a welcome change of pace :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. We have few posters on here up in your neck of the woods.
Suspect my boat probably has to much airdraft to get up the Thames as far as you.
Managed by pure luck to struggle just up past Goring a few years ago.

Fred if you can get to Goring you can get to Abingdon, but that was your previous boat anyway!

Nice to meet you and I hope you will be a regular contributor here. Who knows, if you join a local club like Osney I will probably get to meet you as they Rally to me every August Bank Holiday without fail.

Hi Pat

If you get up here to Lechlade let me know. I'm hoping this will be the year when I manage the grand voyage down to Abingdon. :-)

Thanks for the welcome guys :)

The 23 is well suited to the upper Thames, slides under Osney bridge with ease
I spend a lot of time tied to a pc so I suspect you'll be seeing me about a fair bit

I've not made Lechlade yet (on a boat that is), King's lock is as far as I've ventured upstream so far...perhaps this summer if the weather holds :)

You are off to a good start Prof! We love a keen poster on here!

And is really good to see smaller boat owners participating on here too.

.

Especially if you can ask lots of questions about the most suitable anchor for different parts of the river, what colour ensign to fly (never say wear when referring to an ensign) on which days of the week, etc.

Sits back, lights cigar, pours whiskey and waits for fireworks.

PS welcome along

And a view on whether Fenders should be up or down between locks.....

Honestly!

Welcome aboard, I am at Windsor and occasionally visit your area.

Fenders down preferably dragging in the water :P

My boat came from your neck of the woods last year

I do try to keep them out of the water....but lifting them between each lock is far too much like hard work.
Supposed to be relaxing on the river, not running around the boat every 1/2 hour ;)

I sense some history here...may have to start delving back through some old threads :)

Thats the ticket, well done

OK,but it is vital that all the fenders are of totally differing colour/age/size/condition and that some of them are dragging in the water all of the time while the remainder sort of bounce around.
Also 90% of the fenders must by law be located such as to make them totally ineffectual for the purpose they were designed for.

Good rule of thumb is .....never trust a man with a complete set of matching fenders and if they have been cleaned at some point in the past ....avoid like the plague.:)

Welcome, Pat. Its a whacky bunch in here, but as a relative newbie of just two years I can promise that they are full of help, advice, some humour and (when the brown stuff hits the rotors) always offering a helping hand.

Hope we get to meet somewhere between Reading and 'oop there...'

Pat, we are all pretty harmless here. :)

Some people like fenders up and down, one particular club springs to mind who even do it between Hurley and Temple!

I agree the river is there to relax and enjoy!
