Hi all. I am new to boating and to this site

I have a taken a berth at York Marina, big splash day around the beginning of April.
Does anyone else have a berth there?

If so; some daft questions for your amusement:

Roughly how much is the petrol per litre at the fuel pontoon?

Is it a particularly "hot" marina and roughly how often does one need to change the anodes (magnesium on transom, aluminium on outdrive)?

The Admiral and I are not known for wild partying and are relatively circumspect, but is York a friendly, casual marina or a school tie and blazer type of place?

The entrance onto the river looks quite sedate from the bank. Are there any "interesting" currents or shoals I should know about?

Tried to find this one all over the net without success :- River Ouse max speed limit?
I hope maybe 6mph as my boat would struggle to go below 4-5mph at idle without going in and out of gear regularly.

Kind regards
Mark

Min speed 38 knots

If you can't drink like a fish do not go there

Inflatable sheep are still in

great place for the introvert /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Newbie. York Marina

Hi Mark
Welcome to the forum and to York Marina

Questions
Petrol, last time I bought some it was roughly 1.15, its not cheap, Diesel just went up before end of season to 68p.
Ill have a look at price at weekend
Anodes, not bad, easy last a season of mabe 2, depends if you go down tidal to Hull and then it will eat the river anodes away pretty quick.
As for the marina itself, def not shirt and tie, if you did you would get some funny looks.
Lots of friendly people who will help, quiet alot of differant groups of people, so realy depends what pontoon you get put on. but in general there are alot of decent people there, and a few T-----s.
Lots of things happening with the new owners, some good ideas on mabe putting a clubhouse in the marina and are already on with new showers.
best avoid the old ones as you will shower with the resident frog who spends most of his time there.
The marina is a mix of a lot of diferant walks of life, same realy with the boat mix , sail, narrow boats and plenty of cruisers.
Its got a whole lot busier down there after the limit was put on windermere.

Make sure you are in the centre of the marina exit when you go out, pretty shallow round the edges.
The river itself is nice, but there is a lack of places realy to go and stay, down at naburn lock is a good one for the night, bbq area but gets busy in summer.
York again very nice, busy busy busy in summer, got to get there early to get a mooring in the centre, staying in York overnight, I would not do it, Its quiet roudy when the clubs turn out.
Up river a few miles is a place called Monkey Pool (near Benningborough Hall)
its were 2 rivers joing and is a big pool with banks that you can pop the nose of your boat on. again busy in summer.
Speed limits yep, 5 knots through York and 6 the rest of the way .
Speed cop from BW, well was not about late last year, but he does spend a bit of time cruising up and down.
We are on F pontoon, boat is called seven, just bob round for a brew

Re: Newbie. York Marina

Thanks Joe.

38 knots sounds OK, but with pontoon fuel at £1.15 a litre I can't afford to do it. Inflatable sheep are OK I suppose, but I prefer the real thing. As for drinking like a fish? Never tried on board, I suppose there is the danger of having to breathe like one shortly after the experiment.

Thanks for the info Ian.
We will be on pontoon E, in the cheap seats at the edge of the pond. Boat name: Moondancer. and she is (cue all the jokes I never heard before ......much) a Bayliner 192 cuddy.

Mark

E Pontoon, same as the boat Lady Michell, put cotton wool, in your ears when you hear him start his motors up !!

Jkay, I think he was banned from York for doing 38 knots with a inflatable sheep on board.

I popped down to Burton waters t'other weekend to take a shufty at a boat. I decided I wasn't interested as it was in appalling nick, but then found out it had sold after only two weeks !!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thought boats weren't shifting at the moment ?

(Best not say what it was - someone on here might have bought it). /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
