Hi I have been lurking these forums for some time and have gleaned lots of useful information, I thank you all for that.

I have chartered bare boat yachts in the Med for many years but as retirement approaches I am looking to purchase a yacht for long term cruising in the Med.

Although I've only sailed mono's I feel a cat would best suit my needs. Whilst I've been looking at Prouts and other UK built cats I have come across a 1989 French built Hobart 36, in the Med. A Google search for "Hobart" reveals nothing, if any body is familiar with this model my questions are:

Compared to a Prout 37
What is the build quality
What are the sailing characteristics

Any help would be useful as checking/surveying on site will be expensive just to find its a non starter.

Build quality....

As far as I'm aware, most Hobart cats are DIY-completions, based on bare hulls professionally moulded by Hobart (don't know whether they're still in business). DIY decks and superstructure will vary enormously in build quality, and will often be rather heavier than the designer intended. It's also often the case that DIY-completed boats are difficult to resell compared with production boats, so the asking price should reflect this.

You'd be much safer buying a production boat.
