Hi all im a big time newbie!
im 20 years old, im an apprentice car mechanic and ive never had a boat before! however i have now teamed up with a friend and bought a 16ft speed boat, the seller lied through his teeth when selling it and locked us in his yard untill we handed over the cash! NOT A GOOD START. anyway our boat and its 70hp johnson is in need of complete refurbishment which im making a start on now but with obvioulsy very limited funds due to job^ i will post a picture if anyones intrested?

i signed up to the forum not really knowing what to expect, however looking at some of the drop-dead gorgeous multi million pound yachts you guys have on here i dont know if im really welcome with my £300 project?
if not thats fine ill get my coat and close the door behind me.

many thanks all the best Phil.:)

Since nobody else has said it; I will. Everyone's welcome here!

If you have questions, ask away - there will usually be someone on here with the relevant expertise, or at least a similar experience of something going pear-shaped :)

Yes please; lots of pix - we love them.

Don't be intimidated by the big stuff, most people on here started with something small and, indeed, one forumite currently chronicling the build of his fabulous and massive new mobo is a real outboard anorak - though mainly Mercurys.

If you don't get answers to your questions here, it's also worth trying the Boatmad forums, which concentrate much more on small and often outboard-powered mobos.

PS: People will probably be along soon to tell you to get some training and to buy VHF radios, lifejackets, flares (pyrotechnics, not trousers :)) and a whole host of other safety equipment. They are, by and large, right to do this but, when you're close to being ready to put to sea, put up another post asking people what you really need. You'll get lots of different answers but you'll probably be able to pick out the things that are really useful, by the number of times they are suggested. :)

Welcome to the forum Phil.

You don't need a big flashy boat to come here, especially on the mobo forum :)

Pretty much everyone here just loves boats and most things boaty, i reckon.

As JHR said, post some pics and ask any question you need to, someone here is bound to be able to help.

Hi Phil
you are very welcome and we'd love to see some pics. I have a seagoing boat but if you offered me a swap for a 16foot AND being 20years old again, I'd say yes in an instant. My point is, we only have bigger boats becuase we've been on this planet longer than you, so more time to save up.

If you want any thoughts on your project post questions and pictures on here and there will be lots of help. Lots of people on here mend/build/refurb their own boats and can help, and also can give you links to suppliers of specialist boat parts etc.

I'd be happy to swap for being 20 again, never mind the 16 footer lol

Heck yes, there was this girl I knew then and, aargh, Facebook finds old flames too easily...

Welcome to the gang Phil. I note you have 'fessed up to mechnaical knowledge. Expect to be asked for advice, maybe doubly so if you can say things like that the left handed floggle pin for a current Vilevo 2.4351 is a direct replacement, at 38 pence a time, for the right sided thurible from a Vilevo V8, retailing at just under £45k, as long as you insert it with a three eighths Gripley, and you have one for a pint etc.

Please put up photos of the boat project, we thrive on pictures.

Good luck.

Welcome Phil,

Matter's not what boat you own....your into boats just like the rest of us irrespective of cost or size. I, too would be happier to be 20 again and have a 16 foot speedboat in need of some TLC....
My first boat was a Shakespeare 16ftof 1976 vintage with a blue band 50hp Mercury outboard. I had some fantastic times waterskiing with this on the Medway and even towed it to he South of France for a 2 week holiday with 3 mates with a 1.3 Fiesta (Ghia mind you) where it promptly sank on it's rented mooring during a mistral.

Still one of my favourite boating times some 34 years ago!

Enjoy your new project and ask away as we're all happy to help and impart our knowledge to the beginners.

Welcome to the forum Phil. As others have said, it doesn't matter what boat you've got, everyone on here shares the same interest so everybody gets treated the same, sometimes that's support, sometimes it's a pi55 take. But all in all it's good fun. Yes there are quite a few very smart boats on here, but many of us are budget boaters.
Good luck with your project, hope you have loads of fun.
What area are you in?

newbie

See the only trouble is on here You Will get dodgy advice from time to time.
Everybody but everybody knows the left handed floggle pin is no replacement for the right sided thurible from a Vilevo V8.

It's missleading advice like this you have to filter out for yourself:rolleyes:

What you need to do is get some training, vhf's, lifejackets, flares and a whole load of safety equipement
:)

Hi Phil

I think so many of us started with a project that we all know where you are now, and where you will be in a few years time. It only ever gets more expensive, you have to ensure wife / girlfriend or significant other knows the score and most never mind that much as you certainly can't afford a mistress once you have a boat!

But as everyone has said... we thrive on pictures

just so you know what you are up against, here's my last restoration protect from a couple of years ago now;

...it started like this;

end up looking like this;

..but my fence is still falling down and my hedge still needs cutting!

Forget all that VHF and flares nonsense. What he needs is a small Honda gennie and a toaster...

Welcome mate. As everyone says, loads of advice on here just provide as much info as you can with questions. This helps in trying to answer them as usefully as possible. Good luck with the project. At times it may seem tedious and you might wonder what you taken on, but as soon as you get her on the water it will all make sense.
