Hi Guys,

Been lurking for a while - thanks for all the useful stuff on here.

Quick quesiton - I have a Sealine S34 and am looking to get andinghy (2.4m) + 4hp outboard. I've chosen the 2.4m as it packs down quite small.

Question is re storage. I don't have a lot of places the dinghy will fit and don't fancy the outboard hanging out the back on a bracket. I was thinking of securing both in the engine room (with the fuel tank emptied on the outboard). I'd make sure they were both strapped down / affixed properly.

Good idea/bad idea? I'm having mixed thoughts at the moment - the space is there but obvioulsy I'm concerned about a fire hazard/other.

Cheers

Mat,

I would agree with putting the O/B down there. I did the same on my Chaparral 24ft. It is safer and more secure and away from the elements. You just need a standard L bracket screwed to the engine room sole. As for the Dinghy it is a no! The reason is they tend to break free and a loose diinghy can do a lot of damage. I saw one that had also half melted on top of the engine! The S24 Engine room is not really big enough to put a dinghy away from the engine. Also remember you get the dinghy out mostly when the engine is hot! That means sore burnt bits as well.

The dinghy should fit in the seating area at the back or put it in the Mid Cabin. Another option is to strap it in the bag on the bathing platform.

I agree you are getting the right size dinghy!

Good luck

I know a chap with the same boat as yours.

He used to have snap davits on the bathing platform for the boat and keep the O/B in the anchor locker.

He recently fitted two S/S davits that can be removed (£200) if needed and now has the boat secured under 'proper' davit arms - this also allows him to walk across the back of the boat in the gap behind the rear seat and the tender.

Thanks all! Didn't think about the anchor locker - maybe the dinghy will fit in there when folded?

Understand melting dinghy syndrome which is why I was nervous. If the outboard is in the engine room, I still may burn my bits though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll probably take the bloke approach and buy it all then work it out from there!

Unless there's any more ideas..

Cheers

Sorry,

I meant S34! With twins it is a bit tight down there!

I would put on Removable snap davits with S/S davit arms for the dinghy then leave it blown up. The S34 will easily take a 270 on the platform on Snap Davits so a 240 will leave you plenty of room to get on and off.
Cheers

I've got an S29 with a wooden platform in front of the engines with both the 2.7m dinghy and the 5hp outboard sitting down there - very happy and they never move at sea. I strap it all down with a couple roof-rack straps from Halfords and have never had a problem. It all sits about 4" off the engines, but as I say, it is well strapped down.

Theres nothing like having proper davits and having the dinghy ready to go at all times. None of that pumpimng up or struggling with the engine. Do it properly and use the dinghy ten times more.

ISTR a certain former forumite (GC1 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif) stuffing his deflated dinghy in the engine bay - which resulted in it moving around and becoming shredded after being 'modified' by the pulleys.
