Hi,
I’ve just bought a boat in Newark and before I ship it back to Ireland I am going to do a few days late-season cruising between Newark and Nottingham. Can anyone recommend a few good overnight stops.
Thinking Newark near the castle, Gunthorpe, Farndon and Nottingham. Where are the best places to moor overnight preferably with electricity?
Can anyone recommend any good bars and restaurants worth visiting?
Anything else worth seeing?
Thanks!
Dino

Farndon Marina have both, for a berth with electricity it costs £20 per night and 17p per unit of electricity.

These are recent figures but check them first as they charge their electricity suppliers rates.

Newark... a nice little town with some stuff to see... traditional market, the remains of the castle... Waitrose within easy walk for supplies... pub wise the best imho is the Flying circus on castle gate, The Prince Rupert around the corner is also excellent, does good pizzas and food, and there is a nice Thai almost next door to the Prince... cafe wise there are a few right in castle gate, our favourite is feeling peckish... it’s a bit more cafe than bistro, but the coffee is good andand they do a decent breakfast for not a lot of dosh.

Farndon; A decent selection of pubs/restaurants, the two best are the Boathouse and the riverside, (Riverside is a restaurant, boathouse a combo, riverside has a pizza oven, and does modern English... part of a small local group... modestly up market. We usually go to the boathouse.)

Further upriver I think their is a mooring at fiskerton, I haven’t been to the pubs their in a while, but might be worth a stop..

Gunthorpe, good mooring alongside opposite the unicorn pub, no power, or you can lay alongside adjacent to the lock... very good breakfasts and coffee and Biondi right at the lock, there’s a decent Indian Alos right their called the bayleaf, the unicorn is ok as a corporate pub but not great, Tom Perkins is a long time Notts higher end bistro operation, they also own the riverside at Farndon ... we haven’t been in several years... but too hooray Henry for us...

Further up river you don’t really hit anything good until you get into nottingham... mooring is alongside the steps/wall on the SE side of the river by county hall... you will see some canal boats usually... between Trent bridge and the suspension bridge...

There is an excellent small Italian called La Storia at the bottom of musters road near the cricket ground about a 4 minute walk away.... yu can continue up into west Bridgford which has a good selection of bars and restaurants on the high street including pizza express, carlucios, etc... there is also an excellent deli called number 8.

You can easily catch a bus from the cricket ground up into the centre of town... any green “Bridgford Bus” will take you up into town... the buses are all modern, clean, and their lots of them...no point in a taxi... the lace market is well worth visiting starting with the Nottingham contemporary gallery, (free). Galleries of justice, lots of good pubs, the Keans head, The angel, Annie’s burger shack, over into Hockley, sexy momma loves spaghetti.... etc etc.. Nottnighhams a good place for a visit.

Gunthorpe lock is. Ice place to while away an afternoon and is quiet and safe at night, By the lock is best imho... but the BW mooring is good.

Have fun!

There are C&RT moorings at the locks at Cromwell , Hazelford , Gunthorpe , Stoke and Holme but no electricity.
Above Hazelford is a private moorings with shore power but it seems to be quite full with permanent moorers.
You will need a C&RT river license.

Newark's has a reasonably good selection of restaurants. Try The Danube Restaurant. Lots of pubs and if you like real ale it is hardly possible to find a bad pint.
Farndon has The Boathouse , The Riverside , The Rose and Crown and Knotts Bar and Restaurant .

Thanks for the information folks. Sounds like plenty to do and see for a 4 or 5 day trip.
Is the C&RT licence linked to the boat or the owner? I'm sure a 1 week pass is available.
Just need the weather now...

If your into cathedrals Newark is a good base for both Lincoln cathedral and Southwell minster, You can bus it to the minster, or take the train to Lincoln.

Some good walks from Gunthorpe, cross the bridge and follow tent lane along (carefull of traffic) then go up through the caravan park..(not as bad as it sounds... it’s about 10 units...). And their is a very good walk along the cliff tops of the Trent for several miles, which leads to some good views...
