Hi,
I've heard that it's not good practice to allow the prop/gearbox to rotate when sailing as this can damage gbox bearings. Does anyone have a view on whther a brake of some kind sould be used? Would this increase drag? Any bright ideas about a simple design for a brake that won't break anything if inadvertantly left on when motor started? Appreciate any wisdom on this.

This is very much dependent on the type of gearbox. Some should be stopped, and others are OK to spin. Personally I prefer to lift the whole lot out of the water.

The PRM Newage hydrauyic gearbox can rotate freely without damage to bearings.

There may be another reason you wish to stop the shaft rotating such as positioning the prop at a certain angle for minimun drag.
