unless he's got a neat method of altering the vertical angle of the solar panels, they are only going to be really effective in the morning and evening ?
What about a yard hung horizontally with the panels hanging below ? They can then be trimmed to the normal angle of the sun, and - heaven forfend ! - could even be used as sails, just as the Vikings did a couple of thousand years ago.
Nice journalistic prose though. I hadn't fully realised that living on a motor-sailer was an oxymoron.
I wondered how it would handle a stiff breeze - I guess the 'sails' rotate so they can be feathered (if that is the correct term - i.e. reduce windage). But on a dark day or with power failure, I guess the boat could spend some time on its side.
