According to reports this morning a new wave power scheme for the Isle of Wight will shortly be announced by the Deputy PM. It will be of the Pelamis type (called "the snake" because of its system of interlocking articulated cylinders producing 250kw each - see http://www.reuk.co.uk/Pelamis-Wave-Energy-Project.htm for details). To maximise energy harnessed from any wind direction, and to maximise the scheme's structural integrity, it is intended that the new scheme will encircle the island. Pontoons will be required for ferries to transfer their passengers, a process already nicknamed 'leaping the snake'. Marina fees on the island are likely to be reduced because of the restricted access and the RYA is expected to issue a consultation document shortly on what time penalty should be imposed on those competing in the Round The Island Race inside the new wave power scheme.

David Milliband and Dave Cameron are thought to favour this scheme because of its reduced environmental impact over the alternative proposals to make the IOW self-sufficient in energy generation which are (a) a permanent tidal barrage at the Hurst Narrows, (b) 377 100m wind turbines at various sites on the island or (c) a nuclear reactor near the Niton transmitter. The new scheme could be completed by the beginning of April 2009 (subject to planning appeals). John Prescott said "We must all do our bit to reduce carbon emissions and reduce global warming". He has apparently denied that he has a mobo in a Cowes marina - with twin Jaguar engines - called Monkey Business.
