International certificate of compatance. You get it through the RYA. Inland waters need the extra indorcement.

http://www.rya.org.uk/coursestraining/courses/certcomp/Pages/CertificatesofCompetence.aspx

RYA Certificates of Competence are often the ultimate aim of many aspiring skippers. They are well known, highly respected qualifications worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.

Certificates of Competence are available at Advanced Powerboat, Coastal Skipper, Yachmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean level.

Formal training courses are not compulsory in order to achieve a Certificate of Competence. Instead, provided that you have sufficient experience and seatime, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge. However, many candidates choose to book themselves into an RYA training centre for a course or some tailor-made tuition to prepare them for the exam.

For full details of our Certificates of Competence and how to take an exam, see the Exams section on the left, or click here.

In addition to these RYA Certificates of Competence, many of our training centres and affiliated clubs also offer tests for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). This is a certificate required by leisure boaters visiting many European countries.

For full details of the ICC and other information about boating outside the UK, click here.

ref wannabe boat owner

ok thanks for that black pig just one more question, i want to buy a boat and move it from london to south coast harbour for a refit i wish to do my self.
the problem is moving it down from london to the harbour of chichester.
Do i need to have coastal skill to move it or could i get a skipper with the lisence to do it for me?

i fear with refit time etc it will take alot longer then i frist planned if i need to take coastal classses in skippering i was just hoping to plot the course go across follow coast down and end up in the midi.

but i guess i now need to start studying towards these and start the needed courses. ty again

You do not need any form of licence to operate a private boat in the UK. In fact you do not require anything for most coastal waters around Europe, although some countries do expect you to show evidence of competence. In most inland waterways in Europe you do need a certificate, but this is mainly to do with the rules on the water. You can only get this certificate if you already hold an ICC, for which you have to pass a test. There are also other documents you need.

If you go on the RYA site there is a section on taking your boat abroad which will tell you everything you need to know. The RYA also publish useful booklets on the subject.

thanks

thanks for your promt and very helpfull reply tranona it would be nice to renovate the boat and then do the basics on her after wards instead of worrying about it while i renovate her ty again

depends what country you are in ?

if uk nothing theoretical. In practise just a bit of knowledge and gain some practical experience , enough to keep you and others safe.

In other countries residents will have different rules to comply with.

if you as a uk resident go inland europe then ICC with cevni ?(is that the right acronym ) coastal nothing but( depends on boat length and power/speed/useage) but insurance co will require something to get insurance.Everywhere you go Insurance will be needed to moor up at least 3rd party
