A new pontoon for visiting leisure craft at Dunmore East, in the South Eastern corner of Ireland has just been installed this week. This comes after years of neglect by the Harbour authority of the yachting tourist. The harbour is primarily a deep sea fishing port but the Irish Department of the Marine has now realised the potential of yachting tourism. The sailing club www.whsc.ie there is very friendly and looks forward to welcoming lots of visitors this summer. If you are cruising the south coast of Ireland this summer give it a try.

Can only say 'about time too'. Here is a photo of a raft of boats ahead of us, taken in around 1992, during a period of force 6-7 SW winds. We were in a similar raft, each containing 13 or 14 boats. Note the absence of shore lines, resulting in boats inside us being crushed.

Can vouch for the welcome offered by the sailing club - we bought a lot of Guinness in there.

The new marina in Greystones Harbour has also been operational since a few weeks. Very good shelter and a warm welcome. We were the first visitor from the continent, they told us.

Fantastic news about Dunmore East getting a visitors pleasure craft pontoon.
Used to be a great port of call, my kids loved all the little coves, and the craic in the "Candelight" was mighty!
A new beginning, perhaps bringing Dunmore East back into sailing and boating prominance? The fun to be had used to be so good, it developed the reputation of "The Port of lost Cruises" for all the right reasons, WHSC's welcome being the warmest!

I'd love to give it a try sometime. It is, after all, near the town where I was born : Waterford.

Reminds me of a time in Arklow. I was tied up to a fishing boat (with their permission) and when we retired, there were 7 more boats outside me. In the morning, we were all drifting in the middle of the harbour and the fishing boat was gone.

On the same cruise shown in the photo we had visited Arklow previously. Went to pay the harbourmaster in the morning, asked the price 'it's £6 per night, or £6 per week'.

There's a different outlook over there. In Rosslare I asked a tug where there was diesel for sale. He asked me how much I needed and said: "Give me your jerricans." He filled them and wouldn't accept any payment. He said you wouldn't miss 40 litres in 40tonnes!

A bottle was donated.

At Arklow, the showers were free in the lifeboat house but if we wanted to leave a donation...

Great weather in Dunmore East for the last 3 days, and we enjoyed our visit.

New yacht pontoon as promised - not going to be a spectacular addition to berthing, but useful enough. It's about 2 10m boatlengths, room for about 6 boats if rafted carefully, price 2 euro per meter per night.

Very active sailing club (WHSC), with loads of dinghy action: also a lovely Adventure Centre for kids. Nice place, and if there's not enough room in the harbour I almost prefer anchoring (but not in an easterly).
