It may be just me, but has anyone else noticed the sudden increase in "new users"?

Nothing wrong with that - the more the merrier. But it seems that these new users always pick threads with commercial overtones.
Examples: several of the boatshow threads, the recent ARC thread... to name but two.

I might be paranoid (what's that you said?), but it seems too much of a coincidence to me. If the industry starts to notice what's being said on here that can only be a good thing; but why don't these people declare an interest?

Jon Brooks is a fine example - everyone knows who he is and who he works for. He's always helpful and is respected all round. So, why hide?

I agree, but lets work to turn them into fine examples. I know its great sport to give them a hard time, but perhaps we should foster them a bit more.
I dont know what goes on behind the scenes when these people are banned, are they offeered a warning, or just summarily dismissed?

Viral marketing, becoming a very popular way to drive people to web sites, etc... I am surprised their isnt more on here, given how easy it is to start threads and gain links back to web sites...

Their is also probably a tendancy of new users to try to post about something that have some sort of universal appeal, ergo something that the new user beleives others are interested in, which would include things like boat show, arc, etc due to their marketing...

So maybe a bit of both?

Hello, I'm a new user and I'm very interested in your opinion of the new Rockadock anchor which I'm thinking of buying for my new boat. At only £19.99 plus post and packing it seems an incredible bargain for an anchor which has more holding power than any other anchor on the market today. What is the forum's opinion? You can see the details here and order it online with a 5% discount for YBW friends.

PS - Also available in North America for $29.99.

Ah, I think this is the anchor "deal" where P & Packing come in at an additional £195.00 for next day (no option) delivery.

But you also get, absolutely free, an opportunity for your name to go forward for the prize draw, which this year, is a luxury residence in Panama - you could call it a hideaway - just recently vacated by a celebrated canoist and his wife. "You'll love the ambience" I was told. Plenty of piccies of this des res in all the world's papers....

You probably are right but its a small price to pay for the many people. particularly electrical and mechanical engineers whop provide good and free information on here. I think the forum polices itself quite well. Any blatent post gets promptly attacked whilst more modest ones are often gently tolerated. Its seems an accepted practice for people to post 'how best to sell their boat posts' when in fact they are actually advertising.

It raises a serious question. Do I mention about the book of mine that's coming out in the Spring or do I stay silent in case you are very rude about it, or do I watch every post that might be relevant and then recommend ths 'new best' reading?

Of course this website and the others here have to be looked at in the same way as every other web chat site, you don`t know who you are talking to so beware.
However, I have found these sites to be very helpful there are many people here who have a lot of useful knowledge and they don`t mind sharing it for free, as to the others well who cares.
