Well here I am, bought my first boat this year (Sadler 29) and now today signed on to my first forum, but who are you people I am now talking to? You all have odd names but must be better sailors than me. Or are you?

I look forward to some interesting comments and if you are so kind some helpful advice.

Welcome to Scuttlebut Derek. I'm afraid I've got a very normal name - well normal for Scotland anyway. I'm also an ex Sadler 29 owner. I'm a bit baffled by your thread. Why do you think that the people who contribute here are better sailors than yourself when none of us have a clue how you sail ? What sort of interesting comments are you after and what do you need helpful advice about ?

Hi

Hi Derek,
I find scuttlebutt to be a good site for a yarn and a bit of leg pulling, sometimes some serious comments and sometimes a good argument. Have a good laugh, do not take things too seriously but use the other forums for the serious stuff.

Useful tips

Try posting messages about:

a) Flag eitquette

b) Collision regs

c) Alcohol on boats

d) marina costs

e) costs

f) weather

and you'll be very "popular", i can assure you.

As the others say, this forum is for banter, leg pulling and general ranting. Go to practical et al for real advice.

Hello Del Buoy! I am Jeremy and I am a sailing-holic. (Sorry wrong group)!
Well, you've chosen a conservatively-designed first yacht from a respected designer and reputable builder, so you aren't stupid. Is Jeremy an odd name? I suppose it's fairly odd agnostic parents naming their son after an OT prophet.

The best advice I can give you from the perspective of 32-years' sailing and eighteen years offshore crewing is simple: Never be afraid to ask for advice or information. Or, as my watchleader on a 77' former Round The World racing yacht out it "he who asks is a fool for a moment. He who does not ask is a fool forever".

Thank you for making me so welcome!! (I feel a tear in my eye).

What advice do I need ? Well!!!!!!!

1 How the bloody hell do I find the money to pay for it all.

2 Why does a thermostat for a car cost around £20.00 and for marine engine cost £55.00 ?

3 Why is the wind on the nose on the way out and on the nose on the way back.

4 Why am I doing this

I guess it is better than gardening.

Hi Derek

I wouldn't say we know more about sailing, its just a knack of not letting facts spoil a good argument.

As for your questions:-

1 You just learn to stop worrying about it

2 Because you have the misfortune to live in rip-off Britain

3 Because it always is

4 Don't ask - if you ever find the answer you'll stop doing it

Chewing glass is better than gardening

Welcome.

Yup, both are long standing Scuttlebutt traditions

The legpulling (i.e. thinly disguised one-up-manship) and the duplicate posting - all this technology and still we haven't cracked the duplicate posting.

I say, you bounder...

Why, by Jove, I take great exception to that (puff, blow)!! Such topics as the class-level of ensigns upon the poop, specifically recognised by The Admiralty, and the various methods of saluting partially-submerged Submarines are of the utmost importance, and I shall defend them with my life!!

Ahem. Yes, one of the things I found out fairly quickly was to not take it too serously. Therefore, when someone posts a thread titled "My boat could have your boat anyday of the week, without a spinnaker, whilst carrying a 12V dishwasher and nine Sea Scouts", you know they're only pulling your leg!!

Belay there matey. Only forgot to say "welcome" the first time and not quick enough on the draw to stop things. So "Welcome, thrice welcome", not a duplicate. Touch of the rum DT's and a shaking trigger finger.
