Bought a Suunto M9 watch which has GPS and other gubbins.

Ooooh, what a toy!

Interfaces to PC and ARCS charts for planning, downloads past routes for analysis (as a cruiser a bit overkill, but when I'm in fisherman mode very handy), waypoints, distance to starting line, etc, etc.

In built compass, together with thermometer and barometer with 7 day memory, it even tells the time!

Snow and Rock in Kensington High St, £500. You can get them for £449 from Internet suppliers or less from the states, around $675.

I'm old fashioned enough to pay for the service offered by the shop where they speny 30 mins demo-ing it.

Re: battery life

of course, we are all dead jealous. I know i am. But earlier gps/watch combo's (casio?) suffered from very short battery life of a few hours - how long do you think yours is good for with gps on? do you have to turn gps off except when needed? or what?

ps, sorry for e-dropping it in the sea a moment ago, trust all ok.

Chartplotting

The watch doesn't have one, it comes with a chart display programme, not dissimilar to Navmaster, where you do your planning and analysis of downloads. The watch stores waypoints, routes and logs passage data. The routing works like ordinary GPS, ie dtg waypoint, then onto next once past. For the racing types it works out best attack for marks and start line. I don't race much but will play with it on RTIR this year.

I've not used it in anger yet but am walking in the Lake District this w/e and will be using it for then. Will report back on progress.

Re: battery life

Yes, the batt life is not huge but the thing is rechargeable via cigar lighter, mains, etc. The design switches off the GPS if not in use to protect life but interestingly has a MOB button that turns GPS on and to get a fix in asap. It's not something I would use as first call to trust my life on but would make a good backup if....

Regarding e-dunking, just be careful next time, you know what it costs and I'm a bit short of cash at the moment, cos I bought this watch that I must tell you about sometime.

Optional extras

The grapevine says that Suunto will shortly be introducing new power management options:
• a battery pack with integrated wheels. This resembles a golf trolley, with a four foot high Duracell battery replacing the golf bag.
• a solar charger hat (a joint marketing venture with Tilley)
• a shoulder-mounted wind generator, short back and sides essential.

First trip

Just managed a beat up Victoria Street at 3.7 knots, run back was a miserable 3.5knots with lumpy pavement and lots of traffic to watch out for.

Re: First trip

Please, no comments about needing to scrub my bottom!

Off to try its maiden voyage across London and out to Watford to visit ageing Mum who will be no doubt wondering what her son has been wasting his money on this time.
