I live in Coventry in the midlands and I'm thinking about buying a speed boat but where can I actually take it apart from Kingsbury water park which want nearly £500 for the year plus insurance. I would like to take it somewhere for free, maybe a lake, river, or sea, but there appears to be speed limits and charges for the slip way etc? Does anybody know anywhere ?

Do a proper RYA course on how to handle one, join a waterski club if you can find one and above all learn the impact high speed craft have on other water users, down here in the south east we have a lot of responsible speedboat & PWC users these are to be encouraged, unfortunately there is a significant minority of inconsiderate lunatics who have no respect for other users or their environment and give the good guys a bad name. you stuck your head in the lions den here! Good luck

Yoh! freck1uk, Welcome.
Stick the same question on the Motorboat Forum.
More responses will follow.
Keith has given good advice about training.
It's also nice to put a bit more in Your Profile.

Welcome to the forum. As mentioned above get some training, it will be the best investment you make.

Unfortunatly there are no inshore lakes left in the UK that are free of fees and speedlimits. Loch Lomand doesent have a speed limit, has a free launching site at Balloch but you have to pay for registration.

Theres a couple of lakes in Cumbria that can be used free of charge (Ullswater and Coniston) but there is a strict 10mph speed limit enforced by part time wardens. (Windermere has speed limits, Wardens, registration fees and launching/parking fees but it has the most places to go, 4 public jetties and quite a few pubs /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Your choice in the Midlands is limited as you have found out but get some training and experience and you can get to Wales or the South Coast in a couple of hours.

How long would it take you to get to Cardiff Bay? The slip would cost you but there is no speed limit on most of it. The water quality has been bad for years but they have just started water sking so I think it has improved. The harbor office may have more details, phone 02920877900.
