New to all this!

Hello, I have been watching all this from afar. There seems to be a wealth of information across the boards. I am new to this world of boating. I've recently purchased an old Moonraker motor boat for a reasonable price.
I have so many questions to ask, but I thought I would just pop in and say hello!

Welcome.

This place is doing a fair impresion of
Gardeners Question time these days.

Over the last few weeks. I feel more like a male equivelent of Charley Dimock every day.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Only today, we've had a bloke who wants to cross the chanel, go skiing, fishing and ditch hop. In a boat with no engine.

Noah is back on Poverty Boat Owners. Nuff said

Theres another bloke looking for the nautical equivelent of an AA map, to sail half way round the country!!

Oh.! And a big bloke who's going to race us all while he goes backwards..../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

But I see you've got a Moon Raker, so cant be all bad. Now, how can we help...../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I see from your picture that you have a big one. Is it on shaft drives. I ask as I've not long had the boat. I purchase it in Weymouth. I had a chap look at the boat. He said that it was in sound condition. From his inspection I was able to reduce the asking price for the boat from £39000 to £34500. Which all in all I thought was a good saving.

Not really having had a boat before I asked a knowledgeable frien if he could accompany me back to the mooring that I arranged in Poole at Cobbs Quay Marina. Unfortunatly he was unable to make it on the day that the boat had to be off its mooring in weymouth. His son, a very capable young chap, helped me move the boat. I think he may have been a bit nervous from the look on his face, which did nor really instill much confidence in me. We headed out of weymouth and all was going fine. We were near Lulworth when one of the engines stopped. On our arrival at Poole we had one of the fishermen chaps inspect it for us. He said that we had "picked up a rope". This was later confimed by the marina engineer who pulled a crabpot on a long length of rope off of it.
He has informed me that the shaft may be bent and that the boat will have to be lifted. Is there no way that this can be done in the water. I ask as to lift the boat the charge seems quiet high at £275. What are your thoughts.

Ah no. If I had had a pound everytime I was asked that I would be a rich man by now, sadly not. Although my name does come in handy when booking tickets for the theatre or at the restaurant.

Hi Shaw. Welcome from a "Raggie". For the sake of safety, lift the boat and have a look.

Hi,
Think Haydn summed it up pretty well!
Regarding the lift out, bit of a pain but it has to be done really to be on the safe side.
Good luck

Why not take a dip and have a look? Unless it's badly bent you won't see it even out of the water, you'll have to pull the shaft and have it checked, and that can be a pig of a job getting the shaft out. Or you could ask hlb how to do it without even trying!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Thank you for your replies. It looks as if I will have to have the boat lifted up. It seems rather expensive seeing as being there today the was a chap working in it all day. Its not even as if they have to get a crane in. I will have to get the chaps to get it sorted out for me.

Reading longjohnsilvers reply, I would be most interested to hear how hlb can do this. On a different tack. there is a number on the crab pot. Is this a registration number and can I trace it to bill whoever's crab pot it was for the cost of the repairs.

The number will probably be that of his registered boat so probably can be traced, but expect his response to be 2 words ending with ...........off. If it was a large buoy don't think you stand a hope, if it's tiny and invisible, then maybe ask DEFRA or local fisheries patrol. If it had a number on it then probably laid by a fairly responsible fisherman.

Were you keeping a good lookout for the whole trip? Not meant as a criticism, just a question.

They bouy is about the size of a ballcock from a toilet cistern. I was keeping a lookout. I need to look where I am going. The trip from Weymouth was the first time I have been on a boat. Rather exciting and a mite scarey. Although the fishermans son done a sterling job for one so young. He was lucky that theres was a box for him to stand on otherwise I think he would have had trouble seeing over the dashboard. We were both quiet alarmed to find that the box contained a pistol of sorts. I think its a flare pistol. It is very rusty though.

I have given the number to Freddy, the fishermans son, to see if he can find out who the pot belongs too. I think its rather careless leaving things like this floating in the sea. If it was of a size that is easily seen, then all this sort of trouble can be avoided.

Thankyou for your help

Well that's far too small! Thay are a danger to us all, report him and see what can be done.

Still think having the boat lifted may not achieve much, there must be someone who can pop under to have a quick look. If it's really bent then it will be obvious and out it must come. Otherwise a waste of money unless you want to do other jobs at the same time. Good luck!

Oh, you'll also see another forum for reporting fouled stergear. All grist to the mill.

I once tried to get some one to look at my stearn gear. The bloke turned out to be a complete W. I got banned for an hour or two, the last time I said it
