My RIB will take an 8hp outboard and it's currently pottering round with a 4hp Mariner on the back. Time for a change so any suggestions? Reliabilty as well as performance to be taken into consideration, does that make Honda the obvious choice?

Everyone seems to be raving about the Tohatsu 9.8 - I realise it's a bit big for your tender, but I believe they do an 8hp verson too - might be worth a look. Apparently very light and powerful for a good price

Ive just bought a Tohatsu 9.8. Its the lightest ob for its power. I replaced the ob because my mariner 15 was too heavy for me to lift on and off the boat.

The 9.8 seems to push my rib along planing no slower than my old 15hp. The main difference is noticable getting rib loaded with 4 people up on the plane. Once on the plane i dont really notice any difference between the 2 engines.

Tohotsu is a 50 to 1 oil mix. Running in is 25 to 1 mix. I was surprised at this since mariner ran at 100 to1.

I bought a Yamaha 8 two stroke last year, second hand for £600,
looks like new, starts first time every time. My son is never out of our Avon 280 RIB, does 25 knts one up, but cannot plane easily with 3 or more. Hope this helps!

Tohatsu 9.8 is no heavier than most 8hp engines, I seem to recall that the Tohatsu 6, 8 & 9.8 are all the same basic engine.

I've got a 9.8 and it's excellent, starts easily, runs well and is not too heavy.
