Let's look at t58 at LIBS and see if these steps are well made? I dunno who makes them but probably a custom order from besenzoni or something? All that said, hydraulics can be made very reliable if well-specced (again, as you know in your day job business). In 9 years of med boating, 3 boats, I've never yet had to buy any spare parts for a passerelle!

Just found this http://www.opacmare.com/ixProduct.jsp?ixPageId=1502&ixMenuId=360 on the Opacmare website. Looks v similar? Maybe retrofittable to a Sq 58:)

Ferretti central located passarelle on the 53 onwards since 1997 was a special design developed in coperation with Besenzoni, where it had a crane winch integrated, and could also swivel to thirty degrees on both sides, apart from going only up and down
while I dont know if this is patented or not I also dont know who owns the patent, but I would think it is Ferretti as it was never offered on the Besenzoni catalogue as of last year
this passarelle was offered fon the following models and had a lifting capacity of up to 400kg and of 500kg for the bigger models
it was offered on the 500, 510, 53/530, 55, 57, 590/591, 592, 620, 630/631

Thanks PY. I've seen that version on several ferrettis. It's quite a clever gizmo, becuase I think when you telescope-extend the passerelle the winch automatically lets cable out, so keeping the dinghy hanging at the same height. And vice versa.

I never figured out WHY ferretti did this trick, or the swivel. They seem like solutions to problems that don't exist!

tricky unless you managed to convince the patent office that a pasarelle was a unique type of crane or gangway
Actually, it's not necessary to qualify it as a unique product. It's sufficient to apply for a process rather than a product patent.
That said, most likely in this case there were no patents involved, just some exclusivity agreement between the involved parties (Fer + Bes), methink.

I actually have geekily pondered for 5 minutes retrofitting it.
Assuming that the use as a swim ladder is what you're attracted from, there are specific tools which have been around for some time, tried and tested and also simpler. Which surely means also more reliable and less expensive, not to mention lighter - a very desirable feature astern of a planing boat.
