My starter motor was refurbed/reconditioned about 2 years ago and it seems they did a hash of it. It died on me this week - no previous signs of any problems just a sudden death on Thurs night. My new engineer has taken it out again and rebuilt it again but he says it is knackered and really needs replacing. He says a new starter motor is around €700 - which was is initial quote so as usual that price will probably rise. This seems a lot to me. Does anyone have any views? My engine is a Volvo 2003.

Starter motors are very expensive, mainly because of all the copper inside. However refurbishing is common practice and can be done in such way it will be good as new. There must be specialized companies in your area that do this kind of work (mostly for the automotive sector). I would ask them for a quote. Taking the starter motor from the engine is normally not a big issue, so you could take it off yourself and bring it to the refurbish company.
The kind of company you would be looking for is a company that specializes in alternator and starter motor refurbisment. You might consider also to throw in your altenator as it might be due for some inspection as well.

Try your local Partco or Lucas if you have such things in the republic. If not a local motor factors might be able to help or take a trip up to Belfast and visit the Lucas depot there. If going north of the border you will need real money - not that funny money you now use in the south.

£460 / €700 does seem a bit steep for a replacement starter - More like £200 / €300 for an exchange unit

Remove the motor and take it to a Bosch service centre...Not Lucas...

Removing might need a bit of thought as if it is a fresh water cooled engine there is a water pipe in the way!!!!!!! To remove the pipe you need to undo the securing bolts for the intercooler so it is free to move and so allow the pipe to be pulled out of it..The other end pulls out of the block.

These pipes are sealed with special seals so you ll need to get a few before re assembling.

[/ QUOTE ]I am interested why you recommend using a Bosch service center rather than Lucas or LSUK as they are now known. The LSUK depot near me are able to supply replacements for most makes of starters / alternators etc. either on an exchange basis or new basis.

Take it to a local auto electrical service centre and tell them it is for marine use. They varnish bits inside to make it more resilient to the environment. Check out yellow pages or ask around in the marine engineering circles for the best place. Here in Norfolk/Suffolk there are lots of small one man type businesses that have grown up around the offshore oil and gas industry and do a very good job for very little cash (relativly), its just knowing who to go to.

David,
I got my alternator refurbished at Myles Balfe in Phibsboro - they are specialists in Alternators and Starter Motors, and while not cheap they seem to do a good job.

AES (Auto-electrical services) were recommended to me, and they put me on to a guy called Tony who works on alternators and starters for them.

AES is on 01-8306688, and tony is on 01-8745972 (Dorset lane, off dorset street).

After my other thread on PBO, I had a chat with Tony today while he (a) tested my alternator for free, and (b) dismantled my starter motor for free before we both realised it is burnt to a cinder inside. He made several phone calls to try to locate a reasonably priced replacement for me too, at no charge !

In my case the Bosch starter for my Bukh (from Bukh spares) is £330 sterling, and I cant seem to locate an equivalent anywhere, despite lots of searching.

There a (new) Volvo starter motor advertised for £300 on http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F68740/

best regards,
Aidan.
