New speed limit in Southampton Water

Interesting - though not relevant to me personally since even the Contraption doesn't do anything like 40 knots :)

You're still OK to race the Red Jets if that's your thing though - they do about 35.

Pete

Heading down the solent with tide I managed 40.2 knots, that was the quickest I ever saw.

My new boat won't be as quick.

It'll hit the powerboat boys at Drivers wanting to use the relatively flat water to high speed runs.

I don't see why its the end for raceboat testing? Its only a speed limit in the sense that to go above it you need a Risk Assessment and to inform the Harbour Master. Clearly the real test will be what the Harbour master replies when told you are going to do it (the notice uses the word INFORM, not request)

Risk assessments are pretty straight forward to prepare and they have given the bullet points for the RA in the notice

These would form part of the RA....

(i) the state of visibility;
(ii) the traffic density including concentrations of fishing vessels or any
other vessels;
(iii) the manoeuvrability of the vessel with special reference to stopping
distance and turning ability in the prevailing conditions;
(iv) at night the presence of background light such as from shore lights or
from back scatter of her own lights;
(v) the state of wind, sea and current, and the proximity of navigational
hazards;
(vi) the draught in relation to the available depth of water.
(b) Additionally, by vessels with operational radar:-
(i) the characteristics, efficiency and limitations of the radar equipment;
(ii) any constraints imposed by the radar range scale in use;
(iii) the effect on radar detection of the sea state, weather and other
sources of interference;
(iv) the possibility that small vessels, ice and other floating objects, may
not be detected by radar at an adequate range;
(v) the number, location and movement of vessels detected by radar;
(vi) the more exact assessment of the visibility that may be possible when
radar is used to determine the range of vessels or objects in the vicinity.

Often race the Red Jets had them doing about 40 knots,
Oh well that will save me some fuel now ,

Wonder if this is a result of the crash last year of the Vector Martin crash ?

Thats it for all the raceboat testing that used to go on up and down there then.....not that theres many raceboats left now sadly...

Hunton Powerboats use Southampton Water for all their testing , Have been out on test run doing 60+ knots
