Port Leucate is in the process of adding another 200 or so berths for rent. This will be finished towards the end of 2011.
They are adding pontoons here:-

They are good value - less than 3000 Euros per year for a 15mx5.2m yacht. Port Leucate is within easy sailing reach of the Costa Brava and is in the windiest area of the South of France (an advantage for some, a disadvantage for others).

If you are interested I would recommend you sign up on the form on their website now.

I would imagine that they will be filled up quite rapidly as I think there is nowhere else in the South of France which has space available at the moment.

Haven't been to that part of the SoF for a good while, but I remember it as a bit desolate ashore (inc big lagoons), and a not especially interesting coastline with a fair amount of uninspired holiday home architecture. Also, maybe Mistral prone? Happy to be told things have changed, if they have.

Just curious so I'll ask... Can anyone tell me what sort of local taxes, service charges would be likely on a berth like that, please?..

20nm to the south is where the Pyrenees run into the sea. There are some interesting bays from their down to the Spanish border. Then in Spain Puerto da Selva is a nice little weekend trip we often do. The Costa Brava is wild and undeveloped until you get down to Puerto de Rosas.

The area is prone to the Mistral. Last winter they measured 183km/h winds! But during this season the most we experienced this year was once an F7 down by Cap de Creus (we start thinking about the first reef then).

It does not have the chic of St Tropez of course and is very different from that area.

The total rent for a year for 15mx5.2m is 2996 euros (2010 rates). Includes electricity, water, showers etc.

I have the full tarif list if you want a different size.

Cataramans are 1.5x monohull for the same length (but you get more width).

Just sent the link to my mate whos going that way, looks interesting.
From my point of view, links from manchester?
Stu

No idea. I come from Montpellier (1h20 minutes drive).
In the area are Carcasonne airport, Beziers airport, Perpignan etc etc. Probably the best links are from Girona airport in Spain.

Thank you, I'll pass that info to someone who expressed an interest.

Port Leucate

I completed the form online a few weeks ago but heard nothing. You post was something of a reminder, so I got in touch with them direct.

I've spoken to the capitanerie and faxed over the reservation request. They tell me it's confirmed and have a place from April. I'll be going over just before Christmas (with the paperwork), just in case.

I now need to work out transport for the boat (currently in the Basque Country, on the other side) or sail around, which is a bit of a trip.

Michael, I've pm'd you. Have you received it?

We were blocked there last March for a week and it was grim! It might be ok to leave your boat there but as a liveaboard I would start fashioning your noose now.

We saw evidence of one boat blown half out of it's cradle and dropped back down with a strut going right through her.

Keep in mind transport in and out of the town out of season is dire, the only walkable supermarket is a Lidl or a well-overpriced mini Casino.

I certainly would not want to liveabord there out of season.
In winter the place is deserted - and I mean really dead. Almost all the shops and restaurants are shut. However it starts to open up from Easter weekend onwards.

It can get very windy. This year we had 183km/h accross the south west of France and in Leucate.

I think that throughout the year there is a shuttle to the station from where you can get to civilisation. :)

We generally stock up in our local hyper before coming down to the boat anyway - so it is mostly just croissants we buy before heading off to the yonder......
