New Solas Thing

Sorry, I know this is probably well covered, but I just read PBO on the new passage planning requirements. I'm a bit new to sea sailing and so just tend to pop my head out of the harbour for an hour or two on nice days. Go out with the last of the ebb and pop back in when the tide just starts to flood--simple and easy mooring pick ups!

Does this stuff mean I now have to spend half an hour planning a two hour non-voyage? I'd do this stuff on the occasions I do go somewhere anyway, but for a fiddle in the bay? Seems a bit silly to me.

And thanks to replies to my faced ply question, any nice alternatives to teak as a facing material as someone said this was a bit dull down below?

Depends on where you are, how big your boat is and so on.

In your case if you are outside an area like the Solent, in which you are not required you to passage plan, my understanding is that if you have a chart of the area, have marked or understood where the dangers are and have a strategy for avoiding them, and you have looked at the weather forecast to make sure it is suitable you have probably done all that is needed.

Good sailing

Teak is not dull, just don't use dark varnish! It has a wonderful glow, especially in half light, from oil lamps or dimmed electric.

Went to a very interesting talk last night by James Stevens, the RYA Training Manager held at the Gerrards Cross Sailing Association.

He was asked this question and basically said that if the skipper had made the basic checks that we all make when we go out such as checking on the weather, having a suitable paper chart and generally making a considered decision about the trip then that would be considered adequate planning. A cross channel passage plan could be as simple as a line drawn between two waypoints

He also said that if the RYA were called upon as an expert witness in any court they would support this view in their evidence.
