I need to fit a new, bigger skin fitting (Raw water inlet (Bronze)) to my GRP hull and would ideally like to do this between tides.

While I am aware of the risk's associated, I am confident that I can do it in the 4-5 hours that It will be dry.

However, what should I use to seal the hole and what should I use to bed the new fitting. Bearing in mind that it needs to cure enough (In the current UK south coast weather conditions) within the few hours that I have.

Or am I being silly?

Cheers

I always bed skin fitting in silkaflex and would think that 2/3 hrs should allow it to
dry enough so it would not leak. Would suddjust you wait until a spring tide so you
will be dry for a while longer. I would make sure you had a spare water intake pipe as somtimes you need to cut these to get them of the old sea cock.

sikaflex, sets with moisture, I did the same thing, 3 hours, was adequate, the fitting has never leaked in five years.

New engine going in. Requires a 1" feed. At the mo we only have a 1/2". We are going to fit the new engine while afloat and the only holdup now is the water feed.

If that makes sense.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Looks like I will use next week's spring to punch a hole in the boat.

If anyone see's a sinking/sunk boat on the piles just outside Port Solent you will know that it all went wrong.

While I agree that it will probably set alright when immersed (as it moisture cures), one should be aware that the Sikaflex Technical Bulletins say it should not be immersed in water until after a weeks curing. Of course, with a through hull, only one side will in fact be immersed.
