Just taken delivery of our first boat, a 2001 Sealine S28.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice over the last couple of months, it's really helped with the decision making. I've got a stack of manuals about a foot high to get through, but the previous owners were very kind and spent a couple of hours going though all the buttons, levers and switches.

Our first task is to get it from Cobb's Quay to Hythe where we're going to berth it. Jon Mendez has been very helpful and will provide some more training on the journey.

The two boys are in seventh heaven and are insisting we sleep aboard next weekend.

Hopefully I'll get to meet some of you in the future, and thanks in advance for the many more questions I'm bound to ask!

All the best.

John

Congratulations on an excellent choice of boat, if I might say so.

Any piccies ? We like piccies.

Feel free to ask questions - I might have made a mistake on your behalf already. Mind you, it's surprising how many people insist on ignoring the advice and making the same mistake themselves, just to be sure !

I second that, excellent first boat.

Congratulations and the best of luck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Plenty of S28 and ex 28 owners hereabouts for advise /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Tip, don't hang you weight on top of door frame when popping down to the saloon (like I did). It's easy to do especially in a rush. Can result in cracked gelcoat /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Regards,
SV2.

Another top tip:

When you have unzipped and removed the lower windscreen canvas, and then try to push the frame backwards towards the radar arch, and it doesn't seem to want to go, pushing really REALLY hard (enough to rip the stitching on the canvas) would be a silly thing to do /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif A more sensible approach would be to remember to unfasten the poppers on the side screens first.

Gosh thats really good advice, but its hard to imagine anyone being stupid enough to try that isn't it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ahmmmm. Its the same with the S34 /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Welcome. Nice boat to start with, I had my Sunseeker 23DC for 18 years before moving up to my 2001 S28 that I have had from new, just clocked over 700hrs and love her to bits!!Do all my own maintence and have cross refered most of the engine parts for the local car shop. Will you be doing your own work?
I notice you state that the boat was from CQ, thats where I am based, what was the name of your boat? I am also in your area, just to the other side of Salisbury. If you want a chat just send me a PM.

Thanks all, for the tips and advice!

We're still waiting to get the boat from Cobb's Quay. Solitaire will be helping us get her to Hythe, and he seems very keen on not scaring the pants of us! Can anyone do something about the weather?

She is currently called Castanet II, but we will be renaming her "Schiehallion". I've downloaded a set of instructions on renaming. It seems to involve lots of invocations to the Gods and lots of Champagne. Perhaps best done under the cover of darkness?

So, if you have to spell it phoneticall - Sierra, charlie, hotel, india, echo, hotel, alpha, lima, lima, india, oscar, november. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Well at least you don't need to attend a VHF course /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Trips of the tongue, doesn't it?! My son wanted to call her "Wind Breaker" until we asked him to think about it carefully!

I think what Solitaire is trying to say is that it's better if boat names are easily recognisable over a crackly VHF, otherwise you say "Solent Coastguard this is Unpronounceabubble" and their response will be "Vessel calling Solent, please spell your name", and the first 3 mins of your call ends up spelling the name, getting it wrong, repeating it etc. etc.

Word association games with a bottle of wine can work. Names based on things that mean something to you, or are somehow linked to you, maybe in another language.

In our case, SWMBO is quite a keen gardener, I was born in 1967, but am in no way any kind of Hippie, so "Flower Power" caused us both to fall off the sofa laughing, and there it was....

dvinell is right in what I was getting at! Keep the name short (ish) and not over complicated. Saying that my boat was called Solitaire, hence my "handle". Don't go for anything like "Hayday" and although you may have put you heart and ..... into it don't go for "Our Souls" either! But I'm giving too much of the course way /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Two word names are better than one over the radio. My wife has blonde hair (allegedly) and our son (who was around five at the time and doing 'letter land' at school) came up with "Golden Girl" which fitted the bill perfectly (particularly from a phonetic viewpoint).

Pete

P.S. Don't choose something like "Make Those Deals" or poeple will think that you're a [--word removed--].

Good, he is a safe pair of hands. Just a bit of advice, if he suggests 'seeing what she will do' - hang on /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
