Hi all,

I think it's time to buy new sea water strainers for my Volvo Penta TAMD61A engines:

Still confirming, but to my knowledge, these have never been completely changed in 30 years (boat is a Cranchi Mediterranee 40 from 1990).

The boat is based in Greece and my local mechanic proposed new ones for €380/ piece. He says they're inox, although I'm not sure if that's the case for all parts... As I have to ship down quite some stuff anyway, I wanted to check if it might make sense to order them here in England or elsewhere in Europe and have them shipped down. The original Volvo Penta ones are apparently out of production. Can anyone recommend suitable ones? How do I establish the exact flow rate needed for the TAMD61A engines? Thread should be 2" btw.

Thanks all

I’m wondering..Is there definitely such a thing as original VP units ?
these are different from the fitted from new units on our TAMD61As.

There certainly is, see here. But no longer in production... Waiting for a reply from my father, but could be that these were changed many many years ago. But my mechanic advised to change entire unit, as refurbishing wouldn't make sense vs. replacing entirely. What do you guys think, based on the picture?

Thanks

Ok. So the second item listed as a sea water filter is what is fitted on our boat (1988). Looks different from yours though.
yours would likely clean up perhaps ?
on the sea trial all those years ago when the P385 was first bought with here 61s, I noticed that the small shaft cooling sw pipes off the rear of the engines were both giving a fine spray onto the strainers and shaft glands, causing greening of such fittings. They were promptly put right. Haven’t seen any more of the famous greening since. Perhaps you have had similar issues ?
How do you find that starboard oil filter ? Haha.
