Has anybody done the new "Basic Nav and Safety " shorebased course? Not a very good name for something that looks to have much of the day skipper course in it.

Anyway, if you've done it, what did you think of it? Did you do it all in 2 days or as a nightschool class?

Yep it does have some Dazed Kipper content in it.
However I think the Idea behind the Course is to give peeps a Basic (as the Title says) grasp of Nav and Chartwork + Safety obviously.
As Dazed is quite intense over 5 days (for newbies especially) and a bit drawn out for some over 20 evenings ish, time is so important for peeps these days.
The idea is to cover as much as possible during 16 hours or thereabouts so's peeps have at least a good grounding on the Subjects.
If peeps are at the stage, say, just done PB2 or the equivalent Raggie course, the Basic Nav and safety is a good "Next Step" I reckon.
Log on to the RYA sight, click on RYA TV and a good little filmy thing explains the content quite well, worth a gander!

Thanks. I'm a shorebased instructor wondering about the course and whether it would appeal to mobo users. You see there is a much smaller uptake of training courses amongst mobos compared to yotties and I wondered if this course would appeal more than the trad ones. The RYA certainly aimed it at those people like fishermen or waterskiers who often dont go too far and simply use the boat as a way to achieve something else.

Judging by the number of responses to my question, there isnt a lot of interest. Wonder if thats because of the "basic" in the title ie people think they are beyond that level.

We have had a few requests and it tends to be from two sources. Users of smaller powerboats who want more than the nav offered on a Level 2 PB course and from "partners" of owners of larger vessels who don't want to do the full 40 hour Day Skipper shore based course.

I would point out that it is not enough IMHO to qualify as sufficient to be a substitute for gaining experience to do the Day Skipper practical course or enough knowledge to do the Advanced Powerboat course either.

With respect you asked if anyone had done it and what their opinion of it was not if they would be interested in doing it.
I might be interested in dipping my toe in the water, so to speak, with a short course.
I wouldn't necessarily be as a precursor to gaining further qualifications either.

Rich.
