Need to buy a new RIb in the next couple of months, various options are being thrown my way but what I'd really like is some recommendations.

Needs to be 15,16 or 17ft long
I'd like inboard which may be hard to find on that size. (Novurania do one)
Owner wants a jet but I suspect price may be more important to him at the moment.
Needs to be fairly dry.
Needs to take as many people as possible.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Chris

Suggest that you need to get more information about intended use -
open ocean/sheltered waters
high top speed/good speed in waves
use for diving ? (needs the rear tubes to be lower so that when stopped they tend to stabilise boat better)
numbers of passengers
range
water ski?
maximum weight including engine and fuel (davits capacity)
maximum range of operations (i.e. fuel capacity/engine mix)
maximum price

I am sure there are others, but this will enable you to start zeroing into the correct boat.

It's just a tender, the most important thing is to keep the guests dry when taking them ashore. The crane we have is being changed so we can replace to the spec of the RIB if required. We have eight guests and 6 crew but in reality I can't expect a boat of that size to take more than six. It will be used for waterskiing, wakeboarding and the blow up toys. (not dolls)

Ribs are cottage industry plus the big names Avon, Novurania etc. As you're in Ft Lauderdale you are gonna have to see what's available there, surely?. It wont be economic (and you said the owner is skint) to buy a Euro cottage-built RIB and ship it.

Castoldi make inboard jet RIBs, but for U.S. use I would look at Nautica, based right in Florida.

They have a 16' inboard gasoline jet model and a 15' and a 19' inboard diesel with Hamilton jet. 15' comes with 125HP Yanmar I think. If you don't need gasoline for other toys (PWCs etc.) this might be the way to go.

Out there, the Caribs seem bombproof and have big sponsons to stay dry. In med, sponsons are smaller. I wd've thortcheaper there than here, really?

I have the novamarine 360 rib with ridiculous/fab 175hp 2-stroke loony machine, which I think has been replaced tho. Jets a bit rubbish for all except really decent waterskiers - acceleration is to quick and uncontrolled, so they just do falt out or tickover, and even at tickover (without a neutrtal) they still do a couple of knots

Whatever you choose, try and avoid a white jetrib - they never stay white and it's a load of pratting about for not much of a result.

I see that the owner of the massive boat with crew has succesfully managed to give you the impression that he's skint. This normally takes only a dayor two of turning lights off and drinking crappy wine. In actuality of course, he is loaded, but didn't get rich letting hired help burn his loot on jetribs. So, get the best you can find and insist that they give you a discount. Any discount will do, even if they double the price and then halve it again on the invoice.

Thats true, owners always like you to think they are broke. He doesn't make like he is broke but he feels the boat has set him back more than it needed too so he is watching the money a little more now.

I agree with the jets. In an ideal world a nice ploddy diesel shaft drive would be great but it doesn't fit the 'image'.

It will be white and will stay white, thats what he employs full time crew for. I must admit though if you buy a white rib and stick it on the bathing platform it won't be white for long. This RIB will probably go on the bow with the jetskis.

Re: whiteness

yep, the simple factor of the crap in the atmosphere (esp. in a marina full of diesels) and the erm ribbed surface holds grime. So even if it gets washed and put away in a garage, it'll still become slightly less than white.

I reckon that a good idea is to put on a surface layer of er something as it gets stored - simply to allow a week or so of crap to be washed away, rather than take hold gradually. I am gonna have a go with something like barrier cream, swoosh if off when cleaning.
