I'm given to understand that you can plot a route on your iPad or phone and then transpose it (or upload it or whatever it's called) onto your e series chartplotter. Anyone out there with any experience of this? I've had a bit of a tinker but cannot fathom how it comes together.

You need to have the Navionics app on your iDevice. The chartplotter sets up a WiFi network that you connect the iDevice to and then run the Navionics app and the two sync routes and waypoints. The syncing happens when the app is started and also in real time if the app sees the chartplotter.

Thanks Cardo. So you're saying open the app when you're within wifi range, and the route you made on the iPhone earlier will then appear on the plotter screen, without any command? Does the plotter have to be in any particular mode or screen beforehand?

Make sure you've enabled WiFi on the plotter and connect the iPhone to its network. You'll notice the iPhone will lose its internet connection as it tries use the WiFi network for internet.

Plotter doesn't need to be in any particular mode, you'll see the small sync animation appear on the top right side of the iPhone screen when it syncs. It attempts to sync when you open the Navionics app and when you make any changes. I found that the e7 has a character limit for routes, so keep the names short. If they're too long, they simply fail to sync.
