Hi there,
I have been a member of this site for a few years, and learnt some valuable things.
I would like to now improve my confidence. I am currently in Poole and would like to go to lulworth cove, my boat hold 100ltr fuel, is that enough for a return trip.
Also is there anywhere else that you can recommend, I have completed my level 2 and VHF course.
Sorry if I have asked a silly question, but you all have a lot of knowledge that I would like to exploit.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Lots of variables to think about. Your boat holds around 22gallons and I would estimate that you will do between 1 and 5mpg depending on speed. I think a fair assumption would be 3mpg at cruise so that gives you a theoretical range of 3x22=66miles. Return trip will be about 50 miles, so in theory, yes, you can go to Lulworth and back.

However a stretch of water isnt like a road, wind, tide, weather all play a significant part in fuel consumption. It can increase hugely in the wrong conditions, and you should always plan for this.

To confirm the above figures I would do some real life calculations using full to full tanks and data from your GPS/Plotter. I would also fit an extra tank, plastic portable outboard tanks are cheap and easy to fit.

Aside from your fuel considerations you would be wise to time your trip to cross the St Albans and Kimmeridge ledges at the right time. Catch them at the wrong time and you could be in for a bumpy trip. Also check that there's no firing planned on the Lulworth ranges.
