Was on my mooring this morning (Sunday) loads of power boats going back and to, safety ribs for the Stockboat Racing, going far to fast. I heard big diesels and looked out, there was this big Bene doing about 10knots down the channel, oblivious. I shouted "Hey Mate 4 knots!" one of the chaps below said sorry several times and shouted and gesticulated at the driver on the fly bridge, he appeared to ignore him, we were tossed around by his wash along with the smaller boats moored together on the trots along side us. Hmm, I said to SWMBO and went on about my business when all had calmed down. I looked down the channel and couldnt believe my eyes, he had turned left across the training wall, which was covered (it was near enough hi water) and was stuck fast, the tide by now was roaring out and he wasnt going anywhere! The results are below:

He was still there when we left at 4.00 pm

Not me, wondered how long it would be before someone did it. But i thought is would be a Jet ski.

Never got out last week, n got fed up yesteday and came back to Yorkshire. Typical that the weather would change. Ah well next weekend with a bit of luck.

If we do we will stop for a chat.

Here is one of the ribs that was going back and fro, supposed to be doing max 4knts.
Bear in mind I was in a 2.6 mtr dinghy, being tossed around by his wake!

He was one of the safety boats! The bubble gum machine on his arch was the orange safety flashing lights, he was shepherding the racing boats in and out!

Kwacka job

Kwacka get on yer bike down here .

I reckon you have a novice apprentice rock clearer in need of training.

Boat is from Beaumaris "Little Nicky"

Anybody up on the Menai cut know them?

Hope nobody hurt and recovery on next tide goes ok.

Looks like it could be an expensive mistake and lucky nobody else involved.

Been a busy day at pooly wooly. Lifeboats from Abersoch and Pwllheli and helo 122 rush to aid of sinking raggie earlier on. 122 had to RTB with a technical problem mid rescue hope they were ok.

Big lifeboat went out to the raggie, didnt have any petrol for the pump, helo tried to airlift pump, had a prob with one gearbox, rib had to come back to pwllheli for some petrol! LB pulled the raggie in, nce big varnished jobbie.

Although it says 'Beaumaris' on the blunt end , can't say I recognise the Benny.
As you say' nobody hurt thats' the main thing.
Although pride and hull may be dented!

'Training wall'
Now I think (not thought about this before)those two words can be used in a 'different' manner on future Instruction days!;)

Reckon the boat will be ok, ref refloating, tides are making now.

Yeh, last time in Pwllheli, whilst returning from Porth Dinllaen on 'Mitzi' (36 Jeanneau, with James and his nice family) we saw a Mobo charging in!:(

Plus noticed 'behaviour' like that at Pwll before.
Seems worse there than the 'Menai Cut', dunno what that's all about:confused:

They got off a 7.30pm with a bit of scraping. Then, after nearly doing the same thing again, disappeared out to sea.

Ex Morning Cloud 2

Stu that big varnished raggie as you described was ex Ted Heath's Morning Cloud 2 now called Opposition. Recently completely refurbished. Had a skin fitting leak until bunged.

This was the start and finish boat for the P1 superstocks. I think he was under a bit of pressure to get the boats in and out quick. The safety boats were black and grey, backed up by ours(Pwllheli sailing clubs) which are orange and grey, if you see ours speeding it could be because we have a caualty on board if not, please let me know and I will remonstrate as we have very strickt rules about our wash, speed is not the only consideration.

I hear what you say BUT there is no excuse for speeding in the harbour, if it is dangerous to speed or cause excessive wash then it is so, no exceptions otherwise what is the point? Casualty working should be carried out on site or airlifted if it is urgent. Pressure to start a race is not a good enough excuse to allow speeding. Several times in the last few months I have had to throw myself spreadeagled across my wife and belongings when approaching my boat in my dinghy to avoid injury or damage due to speeding mobos in the channel.
And dare I say it, the lifeboat went out on a pan pan on that day to see to Opposition. I was in my dink in the channel along with a small speed boat, we were both tossed around by its wake as it sped out. A 3 ft wash is nothing to a big boat BUT to us two it was a case of bouncing around in a dangerous manner. I managed to get my bow directly at the wave but was still drenched. I was gesticulating at him to slow down, a simple lift of the throttle would have helped.
On the matter of the black and grey ribs, I spoke to one of them a couple of times, he actually gave it a big handful in front of Ken Fitzpatrick next to my boat!
Sorry for turning this in to a rant BUT it is us on the trots and piles that are being put in danger by thoughtless peeps speeding. Dont forget I suffered £10 k worth of damage to my previous boat caused by, in the opinion of a previous HM, a speeder!

Sorry to hear about the wash Stu, We do try and impress on all visitors the pain wash can cause in the trotts. At least now you have a furumite on the safety boats I might be able to have some effect.
Where abouts on the trotts are you by the way, I will say hi next time I pass(slowly).

Ignorance and Education

Gary

I must say that the PSC support craft are usually very careful to watch their speed/wash past Stu and Myself and they always respond positively to a slow down request.

There are however problems with visiting support ribs at the open events.

I understand that recently a medical emergency meant at one of the open weekends clearance was sought by the OOD to have a PSC rib enter harbour at 35 knots! Skilled driver and virtually no wake no problem especially if broadcast on 16.

It is the bow up stern down "Humpers" travelling faster than displacement boat length speed that cause a problem.

I cant make any comment regarding the support crew for the power boats last weekend as I was offshore enjoying the breeze rather than watching gas guzzlers(F1 GP:D)

However I did get rolled out of my bunk on Saturday or was it Sunday morning by a lifeboat launch!

I am not complaining if it is to save lives and 4 people with water up to their knees in a classic yacht was also justifiable I think Stu.

I do usually display a very bright led lantern if I am onboard at night in the hope to avoid the above!

At other times we suffer from ignorance and I have to say on average this is usually from people using the HM ,Partingtons or Firmhelm slips. A review of the CCTV by the HM could confirm this.

They have no idea what damage or injuries they can cause to liveaboards or to those transferring in loaded dinghies hidden from view with their excessive wakes.

The sailing clubs ribs understand. This has taken education and training this is surely the only way to overcome ignorance.

Steve

PS Both of us on Piles adjacent to first red can. Teas, coffee, or something stronger available to those who dont get the hump.

been on board her. What a fabulous job they've done. Inside has all the original instumentaion of the day - on a panel that folds away with the raymarine stuff behind.

this boat arrived during the night at caernarfon, his mates turned up drunk, shouting and flashing lights of 4x4. The boat has been lifted out for repair in caernarfon, was listing to starboard when it arrived during the night of the world cup final, external bilge pump was fitted whilst at pontoon and waiting for the lift out...
