Bought a 2.5 Mariner yesterday for the inflatable. Great with one exception...Hubby can start the thing but I just can't! Just don't have the strength it would seem to do it at that angle. I've tried everything..even foot on the damned thing to no avail! Any other women have this problem or is it just me? Do they have an option for push button start I wonder coz thats the only way I'm gonna be able to do it I think. Any tips or suggestions??
Thanx, Lisa.
:o

dont know if the mariner is one but some small outboards are easier to start if you can prop the leg up a bit to start something to do with exhaust back pressure .. drop it immediately it starts tho!

You wont find an outboard that small with electric starting! Probably not below about 9 or 10 hp

Take care if you start it propped up a bit that you dont run it with the water pump dry.

Off to the gym this winter for a few body building classes. :D

Thanx both....tried it all which ways and then some! Just a weakling I guess. Bloody frustrating tho!! If I keep pulling the damn chord like this, I'm gonna end up with an arm like Raffa Nedal!!!

Perhaps you need to be a little more aggressive with it ...

1 or two gentle pulls with choke out to get fuel through then a "%*£(%* start you damm thing you ... " pull to get it going ...

Might work with your other arm - I'm left handed and always pull the starter chord with my right ...

Just get the other half to say your bum looks big in those trousers and you will be able to start it with one finger.

Mind you it will be you starting it from then on as the other half will probably be in plaster for many weeks.

Start it with one finger then GIVE him the finger! :)

You will never catch him, a terrified man can always run faster than an angry women.

Keep trying with the outboard, once you succeed you will find it easy from then on.

Remember women used to build and fly aeroplanes in the last war.

My mother-in law was in the Wrens and used to start Spitfires by spinning the prop by hand.

Good job she doesn't read this forum.

No you are not alone with a Mariner. Mrs Ripster hates having start our 3.5 in that she just won't do it unless she absolutely has to. Try Fireball's idea and give it some priming strokes then a good hard yank - sound familiar! It should then fire into life. Make sure of course that the fuel is on and the fuel cap vent is open. Mrs R keeps on about us getting an electric engine we can just switch on and off so we can "ditch this heavy awkward *%?$ thing"

We have an electric one which is brilliant BUT for the bloomin great battery and box you have to cart aswell!! makes space a tad limited. I hate that this makes me sound like a feeble girlie, but on this...I have to concede defeat! Btw...my arm today feels like i've done weights for a week in the gym! All that pain and still no hummm of an engine AGHHHH!:mad:

Keep trying (tomorrow), there's a knack in starting it.

It just means you have to find your way of doing it.

you'll quickly tire youself out doing repeated pulls - I know I've got knackered on previous engines that were reluctant to start !!
Problem can be that with each pull you're putting a bit more fuel into the engine and then you've flooded the engine so it won't start anyway .... so then you have to turn the engine over with the choke and throttle off a few times .... sometimes it'll start then if you can pull it quickly enough - otherwise it's back to the 'choke and a bit of throttle - pull it quick routine.

Do you put one hand on the engine and pull with the other?

This thread is starting to make me giggle...you could wonder what the hell we're talking about!! Yep FB, i've tried one hand one foot, two feet, other hand, standing up, sitting down, yanking hard and quick, yanking hard and slow, pulling til it grips then yanking etc etc and still nothing. I'm seriously considering putting a viagra in its tank! Oh and yeh, the fuel tap is open and the vent too and yes it DOES ahve fuel in it :).

But is it the right type of fuel?

Nitrous oxide fuel, right?
