I have boasted, in the past, about my Spashdown foul weather gear c 1983. It is time however to refresh my wardrobe.

The jacket is starting to look a spot raffish. Let's be frank, it is manky.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive, coastal/channel/offshore, non- breathable, jacket with hood?

I doubt I will get 30 years out of the next one, If I do I will have had a remarkable sailing career.

You did well, mine of similar vintage was retired...actually condemned, 5 years ago.
Bought the mid range Gill for proper wet stuff and a Decathlon cheapy for the summer, both have performed well and being breathable are much better than my splashdown Victory kit.

I'd be very surprised if you can buy an offshore jacket that isn't breathable these days.

Don't be scared of breathable jackets, they're actually fabulous. (darling).

My Musto jacket is about 10 years old and going strong, my smock a couple of years newer but gets a lot of abuse, and is likewise going strong. I only noticed how much I have worn it the other day when I hung it up by the hood to dry it and noticed the difference in colour of the hood and the matching stripe down the back. It had really faded!

Could look at Guy Cotten sailing/fishing gear-Fishy of this parish stocks them, as do most French Fishermans coops.
Helly Hansen still do the orange pvc suits- my Hercules chest highs are 1998 vintage, SWMBO's HH jacket is more than 45 years old;)

Buffalo tops and salopettes are pretty good til it pours out of buckets, but if you keep moving, no worries even then.

Got myself a new Guy Cotten 'Rosbras' fisherman's type jacket in the spring. Great for that solid rain that otherwise forms a continuous cold film on my yachting jacket. From 'Marine and Agricultural Clothing' at Clacton where there's a good stock of the utilitarian end of the range to try on and very helpful service,in our case during a visit arranged for out of hours.Purely a customer - no connection.

Thanks all.

I think I may have a look at the Guy Cotton. In fact I may hold off till next summer and see what I can find in France, something to look forward to.
