New Member advice on KAD42\'s Sunseeker Tomahawk ??

Like to say hello to everyone onboard..
Have just taken the plunge and moved up from single engine sportsboats to a 1993 Sunseeker Mk2 Tomahawk with KAD 42's DP's kept at Cobbs Quay Poole

Can anyone give me any hints/tips on obtaining the best performance from this drive package and any advice on this hull etc.

Thanks

KAD42s have a habit of eating belts. Ensure the pullies are clean, the tension adjuster correctly set, and that you have spare belts on board, and know how to change them. The stress comes on the belt when the low rpm turbo clicks in, controlled by an electric clutch.

Also, you may find the coolant spills. Don't fret! The expansion of the coolant is enough to make it overflow unless you have the larger expansion bottles fitted. Keep the coolant at the Min level.

Get some stainless steel props. Makes things go just that little better.

The low speed turbo is actually a supercharger which works up until the turbo kicks in then cuts out as the turbo wakes up. Also imperative that the valve clearances are done every 200 hrs, otherwise should have no probs.

I suspect yes. The water expansion on the 42 was more than the size of the oriiginal coolant bottle if filled to its max position. Hence, spillage in the bilge after every trip causing great concern!

Volvo then introduced a larger bottle. But even with this fitted, I found the same problem, although to a lesser extent. After much chat with Volvo, it came out that the coolant level should be checked when the engine is hot. Checked, that is - not topped up. Only ever top up when the engine is cold so as not to get sprayed with hot fluid.

Finally, talking with one of their Watford (as it was then) engineers, I was told that the way they now checked the fluid level was by ensuring coolant was just visible at the bottom of the expansion tank and above the pipe level. Certainly not as high as the min level. Then the bottle can cope with the expansion OK......I believe they even changed the manual to reflect this, but I am unsure.
