There are tentative plans afoot for a new mega marina beside the eastern edge of Cherbourg harbour. It is well reported on French TV but no-one seems to be talking about it over here. I spoke to the boss of M Dev and he confirmed that talks are happening but that it is only that at the moment. Probably 2008 before anything concrete (bad pun I know)happens. According to the French connections the plan is for well in excess of 1,000 berths, a casino, 5star hotel and serious housing. A bit like a Port Grimaud of the Nord or even an up market Puerto Solenti.

Having lost huge amounts of harbour traffic over the last few years Cherbourg, despite being rabidly commie, is desperate for regeneration. We, of course, will pay for it through Brussels but at least it might be of benefit to us as for a change. Might even help marina costs over here.

If anyone picks up any gossip always nice to hear!

Heard similar rumours with the added bit that it is MDL. Hence, any ideas of low cost should be forgotten? Also will be a long way from the town.

About 2 miles from the centre of Cherbourg

but will effectively be it's own town if the Mayor's plan goes ahead. There is also big political arguing going on about using the old harbour (underneath Cafe de Paris) for visitors. The impass is that a few v. influential locals don't want any change. Bit like what happened in Barfleur.

Aaaaarrrggggh! Don't say that British marina legalised robbery is starting to be exported! This is a disaster for the rest of the world. Can't the monster be strangled at birth?

MDL already run some marinas in France, including St Quayand Loctudy and yes pricier than others but not to crazy UK heights.

Cherbourg basin in front of Cafe De Paris was already being dredged in mid-October when we were there, the HM guy said for new additional berths. All the existing small boats from there were berthed in the visitors spots, so much so that we had a job finding one vacant when we arrived.

There was also a proposed scheme about 2 years back for a marina west of the existing older one, between it and the naval area but that must have been rejected.

No doubt though that the French will need to build lots of new berths for all the Brits planning to leave the madhouse over here.

Is it just my impression?

France builds marinas, supports its motor industry and i am sure many other things.

UK, BAA sold to the Spanish, was it Abbey National that was sold to a Spanish bank? Stock exchange being sold, Liverpool FC sold.

Are the English a nation of shopkeepers only capable of selling everything they have and not capable of building anything or is it the Uk tax sysyem that does not encourage the activities of building and buying companies?

By the time this is built all the ferries and connections to Blighty will have vanished. The new airlink to Cherbourg from Southampton airport has just closed I see...

But it'll be just dandy for weekend ripabouts wanting to challenge their ballasting with Chantereyne booze! Bit of a walk to Town though...

Aha! But UK banker types are very good at one thing - "releasing value". Hence all the selloffs justified as some vague UK cultural superiority that the remainder of the EU believes is confirmation of our lack of enduring values. So we are constantly in transition (restructuring, dear boy) and achieve nothing durable (planning process too slow you see, except for supermarkets..), whilst the rest of Europe retains its heritage and fosters an environment we UK types just can't get enough of. Including their marinas etc.

Now you know what the best lifestyle combo is: get yourself amongst those UK bankers' bonuses and spend them anywhere, yes anywhere, but in the UK. Now you know that makes sense...
