Breaking news is that the Commissioners in Brussels are about to tax yachts in the Mediterranean.
It is widely acknowledged that there are too many boats in the Med. and marina owners are unanimous that they would prefer fewer but larger boats.
Accordingly the tax formula is aimed to penalise smaller boats with the formula: 100,000/(boat length squared) € per annum so that a 10m yacht will pay 1,000€ and a 20m yacht will pay 250€ pa.
Although the tax may be initially unpopular it is widely recognised that there will be significant long-term economic and environmental benefits. The tax will be initially applied in Mallorca but in time, it will be extended to other busy yachting centres such as the Solent.
The scheme will be administered by the Commissioners of Marine Industry Cerification (COMIC)
