Breaking news is that the Commissioners in Brussels are about to tax yachts in the Mediterranean.
It is widely acknowledged that there are too many boats in the Med. and marina owners are unanimous that they would prefer fewer but larger boats.
Accordingly the tax formula is aimed to penalise smaller boats with the formula: 100,000/(boat length squared) € per annum so that a 10m yacht will pay 1,000€ and a 20m yacht will pay 250€ pa.
Although the tax may be initially unpopular it is widely recognised that there will be significant long-term economic and environmental benefits. The tax will be initially applied in Mallorca but in time, it will be extended to other busy yachting centres such as the Solent.
The scheme will be administered by the Commissioners of Marine Industry Cerification (COMIC)

Two weeks ago the marina here came out with a newsletter saying they needed to do bottom maintenance and would be draining the bay, supposedly a once-every-ten-year job. My husband and I were walking up the dock and saw a number of boat owners madly scampering around, trying to prepare for a day of bottom-sitting in the mud during this emptying. One couple was thinking of using the time to paint their keel. Michael laughed and asked how they thought an entire bay--with a large mouth--was going to be drained overnight--especially as it was scheduled for the wee hours of April 1. Perhaps they could relax and not believe everything they read?

That provoked chagrin and then anger at the marina management. We began imagining lawsuits resulting from angry owners who'd spent money readying their lines and buying additional fenders. One woman we encountered was trying to figure out how to keep her sloop upright on an end tie. She had almost reached a panic state.

Good thing there were a few sane heads prevailing. Not that it wouldn't have been an interesting experience to watch such a maneuver--esp as our full-keeled girl would probably just plunk herself down and wait it out. Unless she got stuck in the mud and stayed there! Hmmm....
