New leisure battery advice.

Thanks Vic - I think :)

For a small motor cruiser with minimal power needs would 115ah and cca figure of 1000 suffice (engine is watermota pre x flow based on ford anglia 105) ?

The CCA is more than adequate. The ah capacity needed depends on on your power useage when the engine is not running.

I should think the Ford Anglia probably had a battery with a capacity perhaps as little as 45 Ah.
In those days CCA was never mentioned but an ordinary starter battery of that capacity would these days typically have a CCA of around 350

If you are using one battery for all purposes you will need to ensure that the battery has a large enough capacity to still be able to start the engine after a period of domestic use.

A separate starter battery, or a reserve battery, charged perhaps via a VSR, could be a sound investment if you do not have the ability to start the engine by hand or an outboard back up engine

Thanks again,

power usage minimal (no gizmos) just lights, nav and interior, bilge pump that's it - daysailing and parking overnight only - would you recommend 1 large or 2 small ?

Id think a 110 ah battery more than adequate.

If you opt for a separate starter battery make it around 60 Ah, reducing the size of the domestic battery a bit if available space dictates.

You mention bilge pump. Is that used much? Not on auto all the time is it? if so that would probably require a larger battery.

Does this watermota engine need 2 x 12V batteries for starting on 24V?

Some did, I believe.

Andy

That I think is the (1600 cc ??) Seapanther although later ones where fitted with a starting aid heater I believe.

Thanks for the replies.

A new battery and solar panel will be added to the already massive/expensive list. I do have a wind turbine but doesn't seem to anything, I prefer solar panels tbh.

Doesn't *seem* to do anything???

First, get a a NASA battery monitor, then you can obsess over it.

After that, consider an alternator regulator, bridging the two 85Ah house batteries & adding a start battery, VSR, 20W solar panel and *then* you can fit a fridge & heating (& IKEA 12DC LEDs).

Maybe you could even join me in being able to bore about Hunter batteries at county level ;-)

Been shopping around for a new battery myself... I've found cheap 'sealed calcium' ones claiming 250 cycles... or for a bit more I can find ones claiming 500 cycles... is 500 as good as it gets? What sort of cycles do the posh batteries do?

Um, a wee bump for my query here... how many cycles can you expect from a good battery?
