I, very foolishly, bought a new laptop six weeks ago and within 2 days, the keyboard stopped working. It finally arrived back from the dealer today. Guess what? It's not working again and all I've done is install AutoRoute.

I am very grumpy about the quality of Pukehard Bull, but I think they prefer to be known as Packard Bell but who gives a sh*t really when the product is so cr*p?

Not only that, but when you call their helpdesk, it costs £1-00 per minute to hang on forever only to get some pimple faced twat that keeps saying erm... ermm... ermm... I don't know....ermm.

Insist on replacement .... I did with a ******data machine I had ..... kept the old in my hand until actual hand-over to ensure that I got the new one ! Funny thing was they reckoned that old was perfectly ok ..... but they changed. About a month later I received my old back 'repaired' ... a slip inside the box stating what they changed !!! I spoke to the service guy ... he said keep quiet - its now end of line and we don't really want it back !!! So I ended up with 2 for price of one .... both are still working fine 4 yrs later !!!!

When I stop to think about it, I suppose I have 4 pcs running at present and I am not at all teckie. The oldest is a packard bell from 2000 which is still going strong. Mind you, it's a bit like the roadsweeper's broom that's lasted 30 years, with 12 new handles and 15 new heads. I think that machine has had everything including the hard drive upgraded. Still the original box though.

Just go along to Novatech at Portsmouth, excellent products at a good price excellent service and help desk which is free.

My desk top is 3 years old and is on at least 16 hrs a day. Despite the fact that I installed my own operating system (winxp) they still provide back up without question.

Just about the only thing I really know about PCs, is that I would never buy from a supplier who runs a premium rate help desk...!

All best Nick

Go to Novatech in Portsmouth. I am on my 3rd laptop from them in 12 years. They are re-badged Mitac computers. I have been very happy with all of them, and they all still work.

Typing this from a Novatech PC that has been upgraded with various bags of bits at least 3 times. I am sure something is still original but I am not quite sure what it is!

They have always sorted me out when anything has gone wrong, even on self builds.

A good tip - did you know that all premium rate numbers have a conventional number behind them with a conventional dialling cost? Have a look at www.saynoto0870.com and click on "search to find an alternative number". Its free and it works! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Are you trying to use autoroute with a gps plugged into the usb port via a usb/serial lead? Probably not, but just a thought, since doing that would give the same sort of result whereby the mouse etc jumps about and the keyboard locks up.

Failing that, does it work without autoroute? In which case it sounds to me like a software compatibility/ error issue.

Failing that , try using the recovery disk.

did the destructive recovery trick and then installed a modem. Bombed again with the same error on rebooting. So another destructive recovery was required and now I've had enough. Am demanding a new one from the dealer and he's trying to get hold of Pukehard Hell (I didn't buy it through Computer World/Dixons/Curries etc)

I worked in the IT industry for 10 years and am confident that I can still recognise a dodgy machine when I see one.

Well that machine is definitely dead dodgy.
It’s making your writing come out all red and blue and slanted.

Looks awful - Hope you kept the receipt

Why is it us IT engineers that think we can buy a cr*p laptop and still have it work? Never learn do we ... at least mine has lasted the year ... only just mind - the battery has gone already and the mousepad buttons are not far behind ...
Oh - and the power in socket fell apart - nice repair job with some superglue, a plastic rawplug, a bit of wire and a soldering iron... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
